well, with the dodger's one....why the heck isn't it Jackie Robinson at second base.....


anyone else have any other complaints of Rob Neyer's lack of baseball knowledge?

Matt, Fort Lauderdale: Rob, I've enjoyed looking at your all-time teams, but I've got to wonder why you didn't include some superior early players. Just two oversights: You didn't pick Lefty Grove for either the A's or Red Sox. And where's Walter Johnson, who played with the Twins' forerunner, the Washington Senators? Just wondering. Thanks.

Rob Neyer: Figuring -- incorrectly, perhaps -- that Oakland fans don't care about Lefty Grove and Twins fans don't care about Walter Johnson, I devoted chapters in the book exclusively to the Twins and to the Oakland A's. However, there are also chapters in the book that consider entire history of the Senators/Twins franchise, and the Philly/K.C./Oakland Athletics. So for all the people who think I "forgot" Mickey Cochrane, don't worry; you just have to find a copy of the book to see what I think about those old-timers.

Gary (Hammond, LA): How could you leave off Jackie Robinson on the Dodgers team?

Rob Neyer: Same deal. There's one chapter on the Los Angeles Dodgers, and another on the Brooklyn and L.A. editions. So yes, Jackie Robinson is the greatest second baseman in Dodgers history.

Not from me. I've been reading him daily (only twice weekly in winter :( ) since about 1997 and find him to be a fantastic beseball analyst/writer. I don't agree with all of his conclusions but he consistently makes good arguements for his points. I think he sometimes needs to step back a little to get behind the stastics. But on the whole I find his baseball knowledge to be quite impressive.

I love how Neyer doesnt give Nolan Ryan too much credit. I hate how people obsess over Ryan's strikeout record without taking into account he never even won a Cy Young award. I know its hard to get to 300 wins and 5700 strikeouts but he also led the league in many years in walks.
