i bought a dvd in turkey a couple weeks ago. turkey's in region 2 while we're in region 1. i'm trying to play it on my laptop back in the states. does anyone know if this is a hardware or a software problem. is there a patch or anything i can use to get this dvd to work?

I think most DVD-ROM lets you set the region 5 times so after that you are SOL.

Depending on your DVD drive, you may be able to update the firmware and disable the limit on region settings.
Here's a page with info: http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/firmware.html
It took about five seconds searching with Google (hint).

I've updated the firmware on a Toshiba DVD drive (SD M1402), and I can change the region as many times as I want.

There is a program that is called DVDgenie that might help you. It makes the software region free.
