The GeFORCE FX5200 is NVIDIA’s GF4MX replacement. The Ti4200 is a faster chipset than the FX5200. However, the FX5200 is DirectX 9.0 compliant, the Ti4200 is not. Most of today’s stuff does not require DirectX 9.0. By the time that DirectX 9.0 is the standard, better, faster and cheaper cards will be available. You can find the Gainward FX5200 card at Newegg for $79.99 with free delivery plus get a free Newegg baseball cap with purchase. You may find it for less elsewhere.

Link to benchmarks. I believe the Ti4200 benchmarked here is the 128MB version, but I don’t think there’s a huge difference between that and the 64MB version.

http://shop1.outpost.com/product/3665105/ If you need an office card, it'll do fine. If you are a game player, forget it. It may be DirectX 9.0 compliant but it doesn't even run DirectX8 games well. In short the card blows for that.

Other things to note this is the 64bit FX5200. Even if it weren't labeled you could tell by the 4 memory chips on it. bjorn3d.com reviewed the 128bit FX5200 which performs better than the 64bit FX5200.

So I should stick to the ti4200 if I want a fairly inexpensive yet good performing card? On the average the 128mb ti4200 is around $100, right?

Definitely stick with the GeForce4 over the FX5200, but don’t even consider an MX version of the GF4. A few good deals have been posted lately. If you don’t mind a refurbished card, the Ti4600 from the Got|Apex Deals page is a great price. Quite a while back I saw a comparison of all the GeForce4 cards and the Ti4600 was roughly 20% faster than the Ti4200. If you stick with the Ti4200, it’s probably better to spend a few extra bucks for the 128MB version.

I’ve owned a 64MB Ti4200 for quite a while and am really happy with it. But I’m not into action games; mostly strategy and RPG which have lesser demands. At today’s prices, I probably would consider the refurbished MSI Ti4600.

Recent deals… you may do better using a search engine, e.g., Pricescan, Pricewatch, etc.:
