Go to www.donotcall.gov - it went live today.

Telemarketers won't be prohibited until October, but who cares, it is free.....

After October, fines up to $11,000 can be assessed for any moron telemarketer calling your numbers.

Enjoy!

so whats the point ...

Q: If I register my number on the National Do Not Call Registry, will it stop all telemarketing calls?

A: No. Placing your number on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop most, but not all, telemarketing calls. Some businesses are exempt from the national registry and still can call you even if you place your number on it. Exempt businesses include:

long-distance phone companies
airlines
banks and credit unions; and
the business of insurance, to the extent that it is regulated by state law.

However, many telemarketing calls are placed by professional telemarketing companies, and even if the company whose goods or services are being sold is exempt, the telemarketing company may be covered.

You may still receive calls from political organizations, charities, telephone surveyors or companies with which you have an existing business relationship.

The FCC has initiated a rulemaking proceeding that would extend the National Do Not Call Registry to many of the businesses that are exempt from FTC coverage.

is it really worth it?? i mean
1) you're putting your number on a list that people can't call, can't other people get your number from there??
2) let's say you put your name on the list and telemarketers still call, is it worth the runaround and hassle to fine them / whatever ?

good idea though, i'm glad telemarketers don't call my cell :)

it also doesnt stop interstate telemarketing, only intrastate telemarketers cant call.. so we are going to have a bunch of little branch offices popping up around the country... they left more loopholes in this than a pound of swiss cheese.

Wish AZ had one. I'm getting more calls from buttheads trying to sell stuff than from people I know!

Even if it's sortofa waste of time cuz of the inter/intrastate thing it only takes a minute to do and I figure at least it'll cut out some of those guys, so whatcha got to lose?

It's definitely a good idea to sign up. I read an article on Yahoo! about it and they interviewed telemarket companies who said the list will help them because if you aren't on the list, you must like telemarket calls and they will focus on your phone number since you like telemarket calls.

Most of my telemarket calls come from long distance companies so it's true that the list will not get rid of most of my calls but hey, there's nothing to lose and I definitely don't want to be identified by telemarketing companies as a household that likes to get calls!

:stupid:

Same here. Of course there are people who get SMS spam on their phones, or get telemarketing calls so you can't be too careful on who you give it to. fyi.

I signed my mom's number up, because I'm a nice guy :P

I Started using the junkbusters Telemarketing script (http://www.junkbusters.com/script.html) and after a few months, I get -very- few calls (~1 a month).
Just asking to have your name removed from the list, along with all the other places they do telemarketing calls from goes a long way.

Well, whatever the case, i signed up. And does that telemarketer zapper REALLY work?

Nanoo Nanoo

yes the telezapper really does work. All it does is play the standard tone that the phone company plays when you dial a number that is not in service. The telemarketing computers think they have dialed a number that is not in service and take your number off their list. However instead of paying 40 bux which is a total rip off for a 50 cent piece of equipment you can download the same tone off to your computer and just record it on the beginning of your answering machine.
