View Full Version : Cigar gift idea?

So my oldest boy is turning 18 in a few weeks. The other day, he says "On my 18th birthday, I'm going to smoke a cigar!" So a light goes off over my head.
I'd like to get him something really fine, like a quality cigar gift pack. Not like a humidor full of stogies, but more like a gift pack with lighter and a few nice cigars (maybe an assortment.)
Trouble is, I couldn't tell the difference between a good cigar and dog poop.
My wife thinks it's the dumbest thing she's ever heard, but I see it as kind of a "rite of passage".
Any ideas?

if there's a cigar shop in the area - ask for a mild mid-sized cigar.
natural wrappers are nice - maduro wrappers seem to be a little stronger in flavor. (strong = bitter)
for a "first" cigar - get something small 4-6 inches. no sense wasting the money on a churchill (size) that he may not like....
my favs are upman, arturo fuente, hoyo, romeo y julieta's are nice if you can get the cuban :shifty:
topane likes macanudo
punch are VERY strong - dad likes them - not me - ew
hope this helps a lil

Macanudos are good because they're pretty mild tasting, definitely better for a first-timer. Upmanns, Partagas, and Romeo y Julieta are all not too strong either and are pretty good. Cohibas are good but are on the harsher side.

it would make a good gift. - i don't recognize the names of some - but that doesn't mean they're bad.
my only warning with getting mail order cigars is FRESHNESS, if they offer fedex overnite - get it. if the cigar dries out, the smoke will be a little bitter and it may unwrap as you smoke it. it doesn't make for a pleasant experience. cigars should feel firm but not brittle. hope this helps.

One comes from a plant, the other comes from a dog. Both smell about the same.

UPDATE: My son's birthday was last Thursday. I gave him a few nice cigars and we enjoyed them while sitting on our balcony overlooking Lake Superior (We were on vacation in Duluth.)
Nick had a Macunudo Baron De Rothschild and I had a Don Diego Corona. It was a real nice time.
As long as I was spending money, I also bought a small humidor and an assortment of a dozen or so mild to medium cigars. I'll give them a try over the next few months and see which ones I like.

My Dad (who was a smoker) had that "conversation" with me when I was 16... the day before he died. Pretty deep stuff... :neartears

So far, my father has had 2-3 heart attacks and is going blind because of smoking.
