Getting Arrested! (http://msn.espn.go.com/nba/news/2003/0706/1577357.html)

Lakers star posted $25,000 bond

EAGLE, Colo. -- Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant turned himself in to police and posted a $25,000 bond on a felony count of sexual assault, the Eagle County sheriff's office said Sunday.

The 24-year-old All-Star guard was released after turning himself in on Friday.

The sheriff's office said an arrest warrant was issued after deputies investigated a woman's claims Tuesday claiming sexual misconduct by Bryant. The incident happened the previous night in a hotel in the Edwards area of Eagle County, near Vail, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

After a series of interviews and a review of the physical evidence, investigators met with representatives for District Attorney Mark Hurlbert and concluded they had enough evidence for the felony sexual assault count, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Hurlbert said Sunday night that he hadn't made a decision on whether to file charges and had not yet seen the arrest report. He said the sheriff's office asked a judge for an arrest warrant instead of requesting one through his office, the usual practice.

"During the investigation, Bryant was cooperative with investigators and remains cooperative with authorities," the sheriff's office said.

Judge Russell Granger ordered the case sealed.

Attempts to reach Bryant for comment were not immediately successful.

"These allegations are completely out of character of the Kobe Bryant we know," Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said in a statement. "For the seven years he's been with us, he has been one of the finest young men we've known and a wonderful asset to both our team and our community.

"However, since this is a legal matter being handled by the authorities in Colorado, we must refrain from further comment at this time."

Similar support, and similar silence, also came from Nike.

"We're pleased to work with Kobe Bryant as he is a great player," Nike spokesman Nigel Powell told ESPN.com. "But since this is a legal matter, we cannot comment at this time."

Bryant recently signed a five-year endorsement deal with Nike believed to be worth more than $8 million per year.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank said the league had no immediate comment.

Bryant was the NBA's second-leading scorer last season, averaging a career-best 30 points a game. He scored 40 or more points in nine straight games in February and also had career-high averages of 6.9 rebounds and 5.9 assists while playing in each of the Lakers' 82 games.

The Lakers were eliminated from the Western Conference semifinals by the San Antonio Spurs, ending Los Angeles' run of three straight NBA championships.

Bryant underwent shoulder surgery on June 12 in New York. The Lakers expect he'll be ready by the start of training camp in October.

Bryant married Vanessa Laine in April 2001. Bryant and his parents recently mended a rift that developed when he became engaged to Laine when she was an 18-year-old high school student.

Vanessa, gave birth to their first child, Natalia Diamante Bryant, in January.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

We'll have to see how it pans out.

Even if it turns out not to be a sexual assault...messing around on his wife who gave birth a few months ago. http://home.earthlink.net/~sbp777/smilies/headshaker.gif

Wonder how jel will take this news.

I am not sure how to take this... I am a big fan....

My gut reaction is that some girl has a sleazeball lawyer and are trying to make a quick buck at Kobe's expense.... forcing him to settle out of court.

People who lie about sexual assault should be forced to spend a night with Mike Tyson or something.

I just hope that this is false.

How sad. I like Kobe. He gives the appearance of a young man focused on his career and family. I hope that there is more to this story but it doesn't look good. Either way, I guess there is one angry 20 year old Mrs. Bryant at home with a 6 month old daughter.

If he truely was cheating on her, she won't be too mad, after all its pay day for her if they split over his marriage infidelity.

This is a sad thing. A few days ago I was listening ot the radio and they were talking about "street credit" and its relation to selling of merchandise. In Kobe's case his image was too clean therefore he couldn't sell his shoes. Not that his shoes were ugly, but that he didn't have a hard enough image. This isn't going to change his image, but it might damage his reputation.

i'm going to go against my usual nature and give Kobe the benefit of the doubt and wait until the charges are proven to be true. he probably bumped some girl's butt in a dance club and is being charged with assault. while i'm NOT a lakers fan, kobe's behavior over his tenure in the league has been good enough for me to resist rushing to judgement without knowing all of the facts. if it was AI or Rasheed Wallace, it would be a different matter.

it wouldn't surprise me if he did what he's been accused of. he probably got horny one night and when this woman refused to give it to him, he slapped her around a bit. the almighty high school graduate ain't so almighty anymore

down with the lakers!

I HATE the lakers like nobody can hate, but I'm gonna side with Kobe on this one. He has done NOTHING in his history to suggest that he could or would do such a thing (unlike Damon Stoudemire who got arrested for pot again). Maybe he did do it, or maybe this woman is just trying to get some money out of him, but I'm gonna give Kobe the benefit of the doubt for the time being.

:stupid:
i'm with cheapbastard and gear here.

on one hand, it wouldn't surprise me if this story is true. unfortunately, because of the way our society treats athletes, they get the idea that they can do anything they want and have anything they want.

on the other hand, i'm going to say innocent until proven guilty for kobe. despite the fact that i don't like him, i respect him both as a player and a person. this is completely out of character with everything in his past. so there's no reason for me to assume that he's suddenly changed. i hope he hasn't.

and to be honest, if this is true, i'm going to be very disappointed....

Who had a more spotless character than MJ? And he cheated on his wife constantly. In an age of pedofiles, lying politicians and murderous children I cannot automatically assume that an athlete is a standup guy.

Kobe has everything to lose, she has everything to gain.

We've watched him the last 7+ years and nothin has remotely happened to suggest this is in Kobe's character. The girl, on the other hand, no one has ever heard of before. Most likely the case will end up dropped. Either way Kobe gets a bad rap.

The sad part is these haters hoping **** like this is true. Shows lack of character on their part. Pathetic!

You must also admit that there are fanatics that are so closed-minded that they would not accept something like this as truth even after it is proven as such.

Well, I don't like the lakers, and everything, but, I have to agree w/ the majority of people here, I don't think Kobe did anything.
And I find it hard to believe that he would jeprodize his career * this is going to affect it no matter what * or his marriage or his life with his daughter over something like that. I think it actually does show good on his part that he went down w/ his wife and daughter last week and turned him self in, because I feel that if someone, regarless of who they are, does something like that they are trying to prove that they are the bigger and better person and have done nothing wrong, and isn't going to try to run from any problems.

I'm taking the wait-and-see approach on this. I don't know Kobe. I may have watched him play 7 years of bball, but I'm don't know his private life and I'm no friend of his so I couldn't vouche for his innocence. I do agree that this is out of character for a guy that's been relatively clean. But, look at Magic Johnson. He is a good guy, but did questionable things too. (jelly, don't get too excited now)
The girl may very well be a gold digger, then again, she may be telling the truth. But we'll see.

I hope he's innocent. Not a Lakers fan but I like Kobe character. But if he does fall from grace he can join the club of other athletes here

Nothing like quoting yourself!:)

From ESPN.com

"Will brush with law raise Kobe's 'street cred'?"

I dont know about street cred but generally sexual predators are looked down upon and not treated too well in say prison.
This would be a pathetic reason for kids to start buying his old ugly @ss shoes.
Just hoping the truth comes out.
