You are the most qualified to talk smack about Marines. ;)

I guess That would be True.. I am the "most qualified" .. but currently.. It would be a bad time for me to bash the marines.. cause they did do a job that I would rather not do (sit in the dirt for a month with no shower.. taking over a country) .. but.. they have also been on my Boat for too long (since we are deployed) .. so I REALLY dont like them right now . .but.. normally I have nothing against them.. Although most of them are not that bright.. but.. thats expected of them :) ..
So I heard this story about army/marines in Iraq the other day...
The Army shows up to relieve the marines of their "Guard Duty" .. after the War was basically over.. One side of this main road was Full of Marines.. And the other side was covered in Army..
The Army had been there all day laying in the Prone Position.. With Rifles at the Ready..
The Marines were on the other side kneeling.. sitting.. Laying on their Back.. or doing just about whatever .. Smoking Cigarettes and relaxing..
So a car drives down the road and backfires.. The Army Hurriedly jumps up.. and takes Aim at the "supposed" threat...
While the marines sit there Smoking cigarettes.. (guess they were used to the "danger" by then.. shrug )..
Just found that interesting.. not sure its relevance.. :)

he's a plagiarist? NO!!! i love that guy. he's so cool.
Tweet, if you want your questions answered by a marine, i can forward any questions you may have to a friend of mine who just returned from Iraq. He's based out of Camp Pendleton which is south of where we are.
I had dinner with him a few weeks back with another college friend (we all went to Boston College together) and he was telling us stories of what it was really like. It's so amazing hearing these stories first-hand.

Well, I come from a mixed family: my Dad was a medic in the army and my brother was a Marine. I tried to get into Navy ROTC but was never able to get past the physical exam (Bad knee - 3 surgeries so far). My father-in-law is a retired Marine Corps Colonel. He was an aviator flying the A-4, A-6, F/A-18 and the Greyhound among others. I worked as a contractor for the Navy for 6 months in San Diego (had a house on Point Loma :) ) and worked at North Island and the Amphib base on Coronado. I did a lot of work on Carriers - replacing the old Xylan network gear and configuring whole new high-end ATM networks onboard while they were at port. I have always found military personnel to be pretty easy to work with (as long as you play by the rules since you are a civilian). You always just have to know that RHIP (Rank Has It's Privledges) and SRD ( S*#! Rolls Downhill - and it gets exponentially bigger along the way) are in full effect at all times. There is always this love/hate relationship between the Navy and Marines (I think it's always been there).
I don't have much experience with the Army - I'm mostly ambivilent about them. The Coast Guard is not easy depending on what your MOS is. SAR is tough. I had a roommate who was a Coastie and he served on a bouy tender along the CA coast. He had is relatively easy. The Air Force is probably the easiest service to serve in - Merlin and I have a good friend who is a Major in the Air Force and he's staying in for his 20 at least. One thing I've always noticed is that if you ask anyone in any other service what they think about the Air Force, you will usually get "Civilians in Uniforms".

Alright squid, I am an Army veteran so don't make me bust out some stories about you Navy folks ;)
The only verifiable stereotype that I found was that Marines in general are not the sharpest tools in the shed, however they are the most "Hooah". I served with all branches when I was in Haiti, and pretty much everyone pulled their weight(although the Air Force guys were a bit pampered).

So.. when we get bored on the ship.. we find a space with a Blank Hatch (as in nothing written on the door) .. and Stand outside of it .. Along the wall.. in a Line (usually grab a buddy to do this.. ) .. wait for the marines to see us .. They will start lining up.. then.. when around 20 marines get lined up behind you.. You say.. "Screw this.. I dont feel like waiting anymore" .. and walk off.. and have your friend do the same a few minutes later..
The only thing that makes it funny is coming back an hour later.. and seeing a Line of marines still standing there waiting for .. Who knows what.. But.. its a Line.. so they must stand in it..
(only funny to me.. cause Ive done it .. and it always works.. shrug. )

What about looking for the mail buoy? :P
Some of the people I worked with had some hilarious stories - the best one I can remember was this very green (and naive) eletrician's mate that the others used to send around the ship (Enterprise, I think) looking for different parts (most of which didn't exist). They would send him from one shop to another - the other shop would have the heads up from the one that sent him - and then redirect him to another shop because they didn't have that part. The best part they once had him looking for: a fallopian tube.

Are there really people that dumb?
personally i'd find a female. Then I'd go back to them and explain i had difficult finding a fallopian tub, but luckly I found the manufacturer of the item. Although they won't be able to ship it out so we'd have to get it ourselves. then I'd hand them a knife and have the female walk in.

And that is why the term Navy is synonymous with scandal. :P

This was before women navy personnel were out in the fleet - about 10 years ago. From what the electrician's mate that told me, this guy was a real tool. :toxic:

Ahh.. Yeah.. but that would be talking about the navy.. (wasnt doing that cause I am in the navy) .. but.. ok... So.. We had the "Mail Bouy" prank pulled this westpac... Mind you im on a Ship with 3000 people on it .. (1000 navy .. 2000 Freeloaders[or marines...]).. so.. When a prank happens where the Captain and XO are involved.. it was that much more Entertaining.. so .. anyways..
We hear called over the 1MC (Ships announcing System) ..
" Station the Mail Buoy Watch, Station the Mail Buoy Watch"
We went out to see who they decided to "hook up" .. and it was Some Junior Ensign .. Fresh out of the Naval Academy (mind you Officers are SUPPOSED to be the Intelligent .. Educated ones).. they had her Wearing a Life Vest.. With a REALLY long Pole with a Hook on the End... And a few other people with her.. Ready for the Mail Bouy to be picked up..
Anyhow.. Other things are to tell people to go get a "bucket of steam" .. Some people actually go try and do that (engineers).. and the rest.. disappear for the Day.. and come back the next day stating "I couldnt get the steam to stay in the bucket.. so.. I went to my rack to think about how I could get it to Stay" . (or some other reason to get off work) ..
We sent a guy to the Female Bathrooms in Boot camp asking where the Pu55y is...
Another guy was sent to the Admin Building .. Claiming he needed to sign his ID10-T form.. so that he could Graduate...
