Staples center that is..

signed a 1 year deal with the lakers, and so, supposedly, Karl Malone will be joining them over in LA.

starting lineup of:
Payton
Bryant
Fox
Malone
O'Neil

that's pretty sick...
with the exception of Fox, that's like a All-Start Game starting lineup.

That is like one of those questions on a standardized test.

Choose the item that does not belong in this list:

A) Gary Payton
B) Kobe Bryant
C) Rick Fox
D) Karl Malone
E) Shaquille O'Neil

i am so f*ckin sad about this... :disa:

i've loved GP ever since the sonics took him in the lottery...

but i guess when you're career's closing out, you'll do anything to get that ring (i.e. malone). god knows he wasn't gonna get one in portland, miami, or milwaukee for that matter. :(

but what if san antonio gets kidd and jermaine o'neal? then it'd be ON, the craziest western conference finals ever...

oh well...

I want to see four ball hoggers demanding the ball. I want to know who is going to make the last shot. Malone is going after Kareem's point record also.

Viet,
Time to shut your mouth hater.

Your already sounding like the beggers that begged during the 3peat for some miracle to end the reign.

:pfft:

Remember odds are against any team going all the way, but not this team. Can you see all star backcourts not scoring a point againt Kobe, GP and Shaq? I can.

i've heard rumors that kobe is considering free agency after the next season. with a lineup like that it seems more of a possibility seeing how he's inclined to showcase himself. it's gonna be a lot harder to do that now...

i think i'm still in a bit of a shock to actually have payton on the lakers... but i'm still torn on this whole malone thing. never liked the jazz mainly cuz of malone. great asset...but i still don't like him.

Well that would be true it they were offering them BIG MONEY... DF it would be if they came for the cash. Obviously it's not the cash they are coming for.

Mid level exception (4.5million) GP got what 12mil last year? If Karl Malone comes also for vet min (1.5million) then he's taking a massive paycut (18million last year) and Veteran exception doesn't sound like the big Money that the Yankees payout to buy championships.

Stacking the Deck? Of course... it helps a great deal but this forces Kidd to go to San Antonio b/c there is 0% chance that he'll win with the Nets. But then again ask Selanne and Kariya about taking less to get more.

also, i'm wondering about the kind of chemistry they'll have...

they're all great players, no doubt, but with kobe, shaq, malone, and gp all in the same starting lineup, i dunno... might turn out like another portland or dallas...?

I'm no Mailman fan. I cant believe hes taking that little money to come play here. Yet, we all know how Sir Charles feels about not having a ring.

Ideally Shaq and Kobe will remain the 1st option with GP and Malone getting a lot of open jump shots. Those jump shots are ones the Lakers other players consistantly missed all of last season. Easy money we call em out here. Probably going to be times when Kobe and Shaq are resting and the GP and Malone continue to run up the score/scoring averages.
Your looking at 100 points between the 4 of them. 30, 30, 20+, 20+.
More importantly is your looking at may end up being the best defense in NBA history.

Phil Jackson knows better how to handle super stars than anyone else and if they want rings, they will listen.

I've been hearing all year about how much the rest of the Lakers suck. Now our rest is as good anyone elses.

Lakers are nothing like the Yanks. GP is taking half his going rate and Malone is taking 1 tenth of what Utah would have paid him.
Lakers pay roll is still less than teams like Dallas and Portland and they have nothing to show for it.

I have to say if GP and KM join the Laker's it will be a wake up call to the rest of the league. But it doesn't guarantee anything, they'll still have to put the work in and the egos aside. DF you said it best, money might not be at stake, but Ego and Pride surely will. But with PJ waving his 10 rings around GP and KM I'm VERY sure they will more than less listen to what he's got to say.

What I'm more concerned with is the Triangle System. And how they will fit in. I believe that GP will fit quickly, b/c he is that kind of player. But KM? Not too sure, then again it might be a whole bunch of Pick and Rolls ;) :D

Man if they both sign daymn, it's going to suck NOT to be a Laker's fan!!! I'm sure going to miss Horry, Shaw and Madsen...

I think that Laker's D is going to SICK... Talk about having some of the best Defense in the League. Only position that I feel would be weak defensively would be the PF position. So KM's job would be to tire out his man on D.:D
With Shaq deciding to get into shape, GP isn't called the Glove for nothing, Fox is a pest and has that "deceptive" speed, Kobe is Kobe. I think that they could really do some damage to other teams by shutting them down.

yippiekiyeh

All teams want to get better. Better by trading, aquiring, drafting etc etc etc... I just don't understand why people are surprised? When a team cares about winning, and actually go out and do something about it we shouldn't be surprised, unless they are the Clippers!:D ...the surprise on my part is that GP and maybe KM are telling me that money isn't everything anymore, it is all about getting the *bling blings* and I have to respect them for that. They believe that LA is the place that they will have the best chance to get their Rings. So that's the way it goes. But remember they still have to Play the Games!! And anything can happen in a season.

It's not like San Antonio isn't trying, or the Kings or Mavs... they all are trying to pick up these players. It seems like those two fellas are just more interested in LA than anywhere else.

I think LA followed up on Malone because they wanted him. SA & Sactown could have, but no one called KM or dropped by his doorstep. There was lots of talk, but no action. Same thing for GP. I guess its all about how eager you are. SA, Dallas & Sactown could have grabbed either of them, but they chose not to pursue them. Now they'll suffer the consequences.

The Lakers fans always get hot when other pple talk about their beloved team. I'm a Lakers hater from day 1 and I don't hide it. I talked $hit about the Lakers during the 3-peat and continue doin' so. I'm just posting what I think about the GP and KM joining the Lakers so stuff it if you don't like what you are reading. Oh yeah and I hope Kobe is around to play next season!

Well its all about the "egos". You might have 4 of the best players in the league on your team but do you think they'll communicate well enough to will a championship? I mean wants the "ego" gets in the way than its pretty much done for. If they put that aside than they have a big change of winning a championsip.

yippiekiyeh

I believe that they are professional enough to put those things aside during the playoffs. But during the regular season it's going to be a he said, they said, I said kind, finger pointing and bad mouthing all around... just call it a gut feeling.

Caught the little barb about Kobe. You would wish for that, loser. Hate away bro. Everyone has to have something that makes em unique.

:pfft:

BTW, Dallas and Portland and San Antonio were all chasing GP, but he felt his best chance to win and contribute was in L.A. Looking to be an effective part of a dynasty or something like that was his reason. Those teams are also going after Malone if for no other reason than to stop L.A. from locking up a title in the off season.
Malone may be just using us to get more money or a better deal from another team. If Kidd goes to San Antonio, Malone could go there too and still make more $$$. TD, Malone, Kidd, Ginolbi(sp), etc.

We may have to make do with Medevenko. :P

You gotta love the way Horry and Madsen have the ability to get under the skin of their opponents. What's funny is that both of them seem to be one of the most nicest guys playing pro ball. Madsen is just freaking hilarious when he's on the sideline jumping up and down screaming like a maniac.

True, but LA got to Malone first. When Dallas & SA were going after Kidd and Mourning. LA went to Malone. So obviously there's an advantage there. Anyway, you may be right about malone trying to get some leverage. But then again, its kind of hard to pass up playing with 3 other future hall of famers.

I do hope Malone wins one before retirement tho...its gonna suck for him to retire without a ring. Kind of makes the whole "best power forward of all time" useless if you can't win a title.

What I heard is Magic, Kupjack, Buss and Shaq all made their run at Malone.

And the fact that Magic is saying KM can use #32 is classy. I was wondering about what number would Malone be wearing... 31? 35? But hearing that MJ will let him wear #32 is a nice touch. Crisis Averted! :D
