Actually, I was sort of curious. Are these pretty hard? What level of familiarity with Win2k in order to pass these tests? Just read the books and go take the test?

The W2K exams are MUCH harder than the NT4 exams ever were. There are still some illegitimate resources around that will help you pass the exams without really knowing anything, but if you do it the right way you'll really need to have some extensive hands-on experience with the systems - just reading won't do it.

Where can you get the study materials for this exam? Are the 2k3 books released? Any other things freely available on the web for them?

Are they still offering free testing? They are not listed on Prometric's website.

I haven't been able to find any study materials for this test. It looks like all the exam prep stuff comes out at the end of Aug (8/26), which is going to be too late for me. It's a beta exam so you won't find much material on the exam as of yet. I would find exam prep stuff for 70-219(same test but Win2K), and then get the evaluation kit from MS and look for the differences. O'Reilly's AD, 2nd Ed., book also has some good info on changes from Win2K to Win2K3.

70-219 was probably the hardest test of the bunch for Win2K MCSE, so I am expecting that 70-297 will be just as difficult.

I have taken these "Free" tests before for the Windows XP. I am also a Microsoft Certified Professional. I think you may have to be one to be invited to take these tests. Essentially they are Beta tests. They are like a million questions, they take 4 hours, and you dont get an answer on pass or fail till months later.
Finding study material is next to impossible due to the fact that its a test about something that isnt really out, or hasnt been out that long.
If you are working on your MSCE and don't mind taking a four hour test then being in suspense for many weeks then go for it. As for me I will pass. Im currently selling toilets at lowes, it seems my MCP isn't worth what they told me it was when I went to school for it years ago.
