View Full Version : Bad Wi-Fi Card?!?!?

I have a Dell Latitude C800 laptop, PIII 850. The PCMCIA slots are right over the processor...

Bought a D-Link DWL-650 (NOT+) Wi-Fi card from Computers4sure (found the deal here) about four months ago. Haven't used it much, but, when I do, the card works great for about 15 minutes. The signal strength then degrades severely. If I pull the card out it's really warm to the touch. If I let it cool for a few minutes, it works again for another fifteen minutes or so. My 3Com PCMCIA NIC works fine for hours on end. The cooling fans in the laptop work fine. Haven't borrowed another Wi-Fi card to try.

D-Link tech support said they'd RMA it, but I spent 40 minutes on hold with their RMA department trying to get an authorization. I hung up before anyone picked up. The tech was skeptical and said that the replacement may well do the same thing. Is he blowing smoke?

Is this a bad card? Sounds like it to me. Anybody BTDT or have opinions to share? I've only got $20 in the card - should I just buy another one, perhaps a different brand, or a different model of D-Link card?

Mods, if this belongs in the Tech Support forum then by all means feel free to move it there...

IMO....D-link NICs suck big balls. You would be better off getting another brand.

I'd recommend trying another wireless card and see if the problem persists. While I haven't used a wireless PCMCIA card, I've seen a few regular NIC cards handle the heat generated from a laptop easily.
