Im off to college and I'm probably going to end up gettin a sager notebook. The only thing I need is an operating system, Windows XP Pro, and maybe productivity software like office XP Pro. I know a lot of people on the boards have been saying that their colleges have these for cheap, but unfortunately my college doesnt sell software. Also my sisters college is selling the operating system for 300 bux. If somebody could purchase software for me, i could pay them. I think its okay becuz i am a college student (well almost...) Thanks for any replies

OKay, so newegg has great prices...pretty much half off. But what about these college students bragging about getting win xp pro full for like 10 bux. Which colleges offer these prices?

I think I heard somewhere that if you can prove you attend another UC you can get discount at their bookstores, but I might be wrong.

I think I figured out what you're asking. When a student purchases the OS through their university, it's done through the MSDNAA. The Academic Alliance allow volume licensing to that school for a certain price. If someone on the board were to get you a copy of, say, Windows XP, for 10 bucks, and then resell it to you, it'd be illegal. Those title are not for resale, and they are basically still the property of the university you bought it from. Sure, it's no harm done to you because you got it for 10 bucks, and it's not much harm to the school because they made 10 bucks, but it's technically illegal. Your newly licensed copy may have your name on it, but it's still property of the university.
So technically, you could buy it off of someone that gets the university discount, but it's considered illegal since you're not a student at that particular institution. You'd need to get it from your school, and only if they had the MSDNAA.

Ya, Illinois State University has that campus licensing deal. We get XP, OFFICE, and Studio.net for free... Well, Applied Computer Science students do anyway.

University of Wisconsin system students can get discounted software as well. I got full blown MS office plus some other MS stuff (ed editions) for $30 shipped.
