Man wielding hammer robs Ventura gas station of $288

A man robbed a gas station in Ventura early Friday morning, police said.
The robber, whose identity was not known, walked up to a cashier standing in the gas island area just after midnight at the Chevron at 7700 Telegraph Road, Ventura police said.
The man threatened the cashier with a large hammer before stealing $288 from the business, police said.
He fled over a south fence to a waiting car, described as a red 1995 Toyota Celica with paper license plates, police said. The car was last seen heading east on Telegraph Road from the Albertsons parking lot.
No one was injured in the incident and police said they did not make any arrests.
Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Ventura Police Department at 339-4400.
