View Full Version : Hard Drive Addiction

This has got to be the newest addiction of the decade.
I know that I may have it. When I see a hard drive that is hovering around the 50 cents per Gigabyte level, I get this feeling of anxiety that there will nevr be a deal like this EVER!!
So I jump on the deal and buy it (with the rebate which takes forever to come) and tell myself that I will never buy another hard drive again EVER!!
But then I see a deal for a 120 GB hard drive for fifty bucks. Well, that's a little over 40 cents per Gigabyte. I contemplate that even though I don't need it, I can't let this deal go by. So I ponder all day wondering if the deal will just go away on it's own.
I check back on the website that has the 50 dollar hard drive and it is gone. Relief!! I didn't have to give into my impulse to have more storage.
Nah, I think it's just you man. I havn't bought a hard drive in months. Don't need anymore space than the 260 GB I have. :)
I know the addiction... I had to stop at 360 GB though because I ran out of IDE channels ;)

Have HD prices EVER gone up? I tell my friends to buy HD space as you need it... when you NEED it.
As in, I'm out of space, I need to add another HD.
For what you'd spend now... you'll probably get 60 more gigs (at least) for the same price in a year or so.
So yes... it's just you, dude :P
Dave.

I'm more or less with DF on this one, though I may be buying a new drive for my new system in the next couple months. Excepting that, I imagine SATA will be in widespread use before I get a new drive.

Yeah there are quite a slew of HD drives I keep seeing. I too have that urge to buy a new HD but have resisted. I'll never need all that space and I haven't used it all up. It's just one of those just in case things.

haha.... 120 gb small... MAN! crazy world we live in :P
The race for the first G|A member to reach 1 TB is on!
Then comes the much longer race to fill that all (in 5-10 years, we're all going to laugh at what I just said... think of Bill Gates, what was it "512K is enough for anyone" :heh: )

Throw in a ps, MB, cpu, video card, and some IDE controller cards and then fill it with HDs. :D

I keep a backup on my C: drive after a fresh install so if something craptapular happens I can go back to the original and load all the essentials again.

I have that addition too but I won't go for anything less than 160GB nowaday. I have a total of 620GB (3x40 + 60 +120 + 2x160) and I still feel the need.

I currently have 23 drives:
8.4GB, 8.4GB, 8.4GB,10.0GB, 13.0GB, 20.4GB, 27.2GB, 27.3GB, 27.3GB, 30.0GB, 30.0GB, 40.0GB, 40.0GB, 40.0GB, 40.0GB, 80.0GB, 80.0GB, 120GB, 120GB, 120GB, 120GB, 160GB, 160GB
The bigger drives will be in a file and MP3 server. Each computer built for normal use will usually have two drive. I've got a couple external firewire dual drive cases from Computergeeks for additional storage whenever needed.
The smaller drives are used for computers running Linux. These computers don't need big drives or fast processors.

I thought I had alot.. but listening to some of you, dayuuum!
In one of my systems, I have:
6 WD 120gb 8mb SE (4 of which have been wiped for some weird reason...)
1 WD 200gb 8mb SE
Other systems:
40gb
25gb
8gb
2 75gb
60gb
and as for the problem... i used to always want to buy more hd's.. but with my recent luck with hd's, i've stopped. hd's are always getting cheaper... and i haven't been downloading as much.. so i've been able to manage without buying :)

Porn. After a while it does start totake up quite a bit of space.
As for me, I have 5 hard drives, a zip drive, CD-RW, and a DVD Rom. I'd like to put in more but that's all the case can take.

I'm starting to use DVDs for backing up data from my hard drives. I used to use CDs, but it was taking way too many of them. I'm glad that DVD writers finally came down in price.
I've consolidated most of my smaller drives to larger drives, to make backing up a little easier.
