Getaway driver was 77-year-old (http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_804910.html?menu=news.quirkies)
Italian police who arrested a man thought to be the getaway driver for a gang found he was 77 years old.
The man, identified only as Antonio S, is said to have led officers on a high speed chase through country lanes before being arrested.
He and two others were allegedly behind a £10,000 armed raid on a bank at Marano Ticino in northern Italy.
Officers said while Antonio waited outside the other two men ordered cashiers to fill money bags before they escaped in the car.
Antonio was later arrested alone as he sat parked in a lay-by.
As he was being led away he told officers: "I have nothing to do with this. I have done nothing wrong."
He has been placed under house arrest during the ongoing investigation after magistrates decided he was too old to be kept in custody.
A spokesman said:"When the officers found the car they were amazed to see this elderly grey haired gentleman at the wheel.
"You would expect someone of his age to be out playing cards in his local bar or playing with his grandchildren not being the getaway driver for a gang of bank robbers."
