I just got a new used car. It's an economy model and has ****ty stereo and speakers. I'd like to get new ones. I don't need the best, just something that sounds decent with a little bass. Cheap is good. I'm going to grad school this fall so I'm going to be hurting for cash.
Also, are they (stereo and speakers) hard to install yourself? Maybe I can save a few bucks that way...
Any ideas/comments/suggestions?

What kind of speakers are in it currently? 5.5"? 6"? 6x9? Make sure you have the dimensions of the existing speakers before you attempt to replace them, or you could wind up with some trouble. After that, I'd recommend checking Crutchfield's website (www.crutchfield.com) to get recommendations. Get a copy of their catalog sent to you -- it has so many things in it that tell which speakers will work best for your type of vehicle.

Thanks for the tip! They have a vehicle selector thingie online that tells you what size speakers you have
I need 5 1/4 and 6x9s. I think my main problem is the crappy stock speakers in my car and not necessarily the stereo. So I'm going to replace the speakers myself. The rear ones are going to be a breeze, but I'm going to have to figure out how to get the door panel off to get to the front ones.
Anyone know of a brand or model of speakers that are a really good price/performance value?

I have a friend that's been in the speaker trend for a while, and he's been recommending Audiobahn as a really good set. They haven't hit the big time like Rockford-Fosgate or Infinity, but he said their quality is top notch, and since they're not a huge "name brand" yet, their prices are still relatively low.
And depending on what kind of car you have, removing the door panel involves very little effort at all -- there's typically a few places to pry open... and going back to Crutchfield -- they sell a prying tool to get right into the bolts.

I love my Alpine stereo. I've had 2 in 9 years, the only reason it's 2 is because I upgraded a year ago. Everything is dependant upon how much you are willing to spend and what you want out of your system. I'm not huge into making my truck thump, so I have a 50 watt Alpine, 2 6.5 Cerwin Vegas in front doors and 2 6.5 Pioneers in the back doors. The sound is pretty dang good, and they have a good amount of bass for only being door speakers.

I've looked around on the net and found a couple that look promising. I'm thinking of getting the LANZAR VX520 and VX692 from http://www.justcarspeakers.com/Speaker_Pages/Lanzar/Lanzar_vx.htm
They would be about $100, which is the right price. What do you guys think? that site says they are decent speakers at a good price. but I don't want to get them if they aren't noticably better than my stock pieces of ****.
