"Report: Angler Admits Faking Trout Record
LONDON (AP) -- An avid angler who claimed a British record eight years ago for catching a monster rainbow trout has confessed that he didn't hook the fish. It was already dead.
"I just feel so much better about myself now. It's like a weight's been lifted off me," said Clive White, 35, who notified the British Fish Record Committee two weeks ago about his deception.
He had claimed a record with a trout weighing 36 pounds, 14 ounces.
White said Monday that a friend had raised the trout, and provided it to him in a plot to set a record, the British news agency Press Association reported. The friend, who was not identified, denied any involvement in such a plot, Press Association added.
White told a different story to The Times newspaper, which quoted him as saying he had found the dead fish floating on the water, scooped it into his net and told two other fisherman that he had caught it.
White said he had felt guilty ever since.
"It's destroyed me, my marriage and everything I ever wanted. I felt so guilty. Not a week went by without me thinking about it. But I do feel a lot better now it's out in the open," Press Association quoted him as saying."
