probably 4 out of 10 times i turn on my xbox the game does not load and a screen pops up that says something like: the xbox does not recognize this disc please insert an xbox game, dvd, or music cd. and when it does load, probably 1 out of 20 times i play, the xbox freezes in the middle of the game and won't come back. is my xbox on it's last legs or do i just have to clean perhaps the laser thing a majig. if i have to clean it what products do you recommend?

I can offer you a couple of things you can do, first the discs might all be scratched, probably not though :). You could buy a dvd lens cleaner kit, people have said those have helped with DDE(dirty disk error) msgs. You can also clear the cache, by unplugging your xbox for about 12hours(if you do it correctly you have to reset the time). That has hepled with my xbox. And the last is call up MS at 1-800-4myxbox. I had to do that, even though it was out of warrenty(bought launch week) but over a year later they still covered it. So it cost me nothing. But they might charge you shipping if they decide you are under warrenty now, or even charge you like a 100$ to fix it, But it is worth a shot.

If I were you, I would ebay it now an advertise it as "fully working" which is true, and later on mention "as is." Make sure they get postal insurance so that anything wrong with it when they open the box can be blamed on shipping.

Is this underhanded? A bit. But so it microsoft selling you a POS system which failed after you dropped hundreds of dollars on it.

a little update i tried the unplug method. i still get the "xbox does not recognize..." if i turn on xbox and then put in disc. i don't get the "xbox does not recognize..." if i put disc in then turn off, let sit a few seconds and then turn on again. but i just got madden 2004 and right in the middle of the damn draft or some game the "xbox does not recognize...disc may be dirty..." warning pops up and the game freezes and i have to turn off the xbox. i used a cd/game system lense cleaner but still nothing. anymore ideas.

Yup, call up MS, 18004myxbox.... Or go buy a new one. I know it sucks, but you got one of the defect ones, probably from launch, one of the <1% of all ones made. Happened to me too, I was lucky that MS replaced and it said it was still under warrenty after a year... If not, you can get a new one for 180ish...

I just put my games onto my harddrive so that they don't skip.

They also don't have load times which is really nice.
Now i love my xbox but i dont know if it loves me
