Public Aghast as Kittens Fed Alive to Snakes
Wed August 6, 2003 11:02 AM ET
OSLO (Reuters) - Norwegian kittens are in mortal danger from pet snakes for whom a rat just doesn't seem filling enough.
A reptile expert said on Wednesday that cat owners, who hoped kittens they had to give away would go to a good home, were outraged to find that some were ending up as dinner for pythons and other snakes kept illegally as pets.

"Some people get a kick out of seeing a kitten being eaten alive by a snake," biologist Kees Ekeli, director of the Bergen Aquarium in western Norway, told Reuters. "It's cheap and it's a good size for a medium-sized snake."

"It's heart-breaking for the people who have feelings for their kittens."

Sometimes, advertisements offering kittens in local papers stipulate: "Not for snake food."

It is illegal in Norway to keep snakes as pets and to use live animals as feed. A nine-foot-long snake usually eats a big rat about every three days.

Ekeli said owners of snakes, mostly pythons, frequently call a reptile center he runs for advice on how to look after pets who seem only to want fresh kitten for dinner.

"We advise snake owners to train their pets to eat dead mice or rats," he said -- typically by heating up the rat or the mouse in a microwave and shaking it to make it look alive.

I don't know why this is any worse than a cat eating a fish. Only diffrence is kittys are furry.

Another reason to have dogs instead of cats. Atleast they're not snake food.

I agree with ya, but a point for them is that they were giving them away as pets, not as food, so part of their outrage is most likely the use of the kittens (although the fact that kittens eaten by snakes are bound to get some Norweigan's panties in a bunch)

I concur. That's one of the worst things I've ever heard. Tricking a perfectly innocent snake into thinking he's getting a yummy kitten.

Makes me think of the time I saw a cat get thrown in to a tank full of pirahnas. Blood, guts, and fur everywhere. *shudder*

Bah, that's what rabbits are for, bigger than rats not as cute as kittens.

I knew a fish guy with a tank of pirahnas. He was renting out the tank to Dr Dre for one of his videos and he thought he should feed them before taking them to Dre. Of course he had to do a full water change after the feeding frenzy.

Hahaha! All I can think of when I read this is that Far Side cartoon where a family of snakes is sitting around the table about to eat some dead rats, and the mother says something like, "Bobby, jiggle grandpa's rat so it looks alive".

Anyone have a .jpg of that one?
