More modem troubles...woo freakin hoo...

Yep, you guessed it. It's me again. Well, I'm in the new house now and I've already gone through the Diamond Supra Express. Performance was mediocre at best...I would get disconnected often while in-game and it drove me mad.
Now I'm trying out the Internet "Gaming" modem. I'm having a slight problem...EVERY NEW MODEM I INSTALL IS ON A INCREASINGLY HIGHER COM PORT! The Supra Express was on COM4, and now the Gaming Modem is on COM5. My old $38 PCI Aztech LT Winmodem was on COM3 (being the first modem I installed). I've uninstalled all these modems since than, but I cannot get ANY of them to install on Com1/Com2 (and hell no, I don't have a serial mouse taking up Com1).

I need some serious help out of this problem. My pings are GREAT with this gaming modem, however in game gets laggier than hell (almost like my Supra Express). I think it's an IRQ conflict, and I need to get around it ASAP. How can I get my damn modem on COM1/COM2 and fix this problem? I've already been told to remove all jumpers from the Gaming Modem...I don't know if I'm going blind or not, but I can't find any jumpers on the thing. So i'm assuming its all handled via software.

Somebody help! I wanna get this working.

Note: I've tested the gaming modem in game and performance gets horrible. Pings jump to 250/300 all the time ... all the while I ping 130/150 from Gamespy/DOS. :\ I think this conflict is leading to it. Dunno for sure....

boot safe mode and uninstall your old modems.

Com1 and 2 are reserved so I don't think you can ever get a device to install there. Make sure all the drivers are uninstalled for your old modem. If worst comes to worst, reinstall Windows.

What?!? You can't get a device to install on Com1/Com2. Better not tell my modem that its using Com2.

Go ahead and delete all of your COM ports and let them reinstall, that usually takes care of that. Afterwords, reinstall the modem.

General Windows info that should help your modem problem -

Boot into safe mode. Go to Device Manager and expand all categories except System Devices. Delete all old hardware and anything that is duplicated. You may see something like three COM1 entries. Be sure to have any necessary drivers handy and reboot.

I once did this one a month-old 98 box. It had five Com1's, three LPT1's, four floppy drives, etc. I deleted everything that was duplicated, leaving one of each that was really should have been there. This cleared up all kinds of slowups and hangs. I now do this every month. You'd be surprised what crops up.

Normally Windows set Com1 and Com2 for the serial ports. It's a real b*tch trying to use that for your modem. I did it once but can't remember how.

Easiest way to get around this problem is to disable the external serial (COM) ports in BIOS. This is child's play with the Award Bios and it will free up IRQ's and more importantly the COM port if you aren't using them. I used to have my modem on COM 1 all the time until I installed my Palm Pilot handset on Serial Port 1. Now my modem is on Com 2 and quite happy.
