can i just upgrade/continue my service and get the deal on the phone while keeping my same number?

some resellers will allow you to just purchase a phone, some resellers MUST activate a new contract. I know at Costco you can just buy a phone and use it with your current plan. Staples you have to activate a new contract. I've never dealt with Amazon, so i'm not sure. Your best bet is to email or call them to find out their rules.

I am fairly sure that you cant. They only deal with new service. I was trying to convince them to give me a phone to be used with a family plan and they wouldnt.

I agree with ramazank2. I had called and talked to amazon's CSR. they told me the prices and rebates and valid only with new line activation.

Has anyone purchased an AT&T phone from amazon and then figured out how to get the minutes offered on the AT&T site?
At amazon it is 39.99 for 350 minutes.
AT&T has 39.99 for 650 minutes. (or 600 without the online bonus)

The thing is, the phones are much cheaper at amazon, so I'd like to buy there.

The mpx200 (for instance) is 69 at amazon and 200 at AT&T. Is it possible to just switch to a new contract right after you sign up with amazon?

I would think that you just need to call up ATT and ask.

you can always order from amazon, and use the number transfer to keep your old phone number.

it turns out i'm not gonna do it. I looked around a little more, at&t doesn't seem to do so well service wise in the bay area. I'm gonna stick with verizon and just settle on the lg vx6000. i was excited about the mpx200 but what are you gonna do.

although it says 350 minutes monthly it is actually 550.....if u read the list of thing that come with the plan (i.e. call waiting, caller ID and so on) there are 200 bonus minutes included every month for a one year plan and 250 a month for a two year plan.

i ended up buying the mpx200 porting my number over only to realize att gsm is absolutely awful. the only thing i can think of worse than is is att's customer service. i canceled my att plan within the 30 days but actually tried to port my number back to tmobile first which would cancel my plan automatically. att was so slow with porting (upwards of 14 days) that i had to cancel the number just buy new tmobile plan from amazon with the samsung e105 and get an entirely new number. att gsm sucks and i would never recommend them to anyone regardless of whether or not they even wanted tdma just bc their customer service is that bad.

i kept the mpx200 and am hoping to still catch the amazon rebates and i have rebates to get for the e105 too, so i have two phones but i have a new number and huge hassle under my belt.

Actually I bought a Phone for AT&T from Amazon. Their GSM is *much* better IMHO in the peninsula portion of the Bay area than T-Mobile. I get reception in the mountains, where a buddy gets none. Amazon, was insistent about me closing my old account, to be eligable for all the rebates. I prefer dealing with AT&T B&M's better than phone service. The B&M's can give you deals that phone support, can't.
