I'll be taking a flight to China in about 7 hours and will be gone about a month. Just wanted to let everyone know, before people start wondering why I'm not on AIM or posting. :) I'll miss ya guys!
I'd like to say its for vacation, but its not. I'm going there for treatment, for something I'd rather not disclose at this time, though some of you may already know. I'm also taking the semester off from school. The G|A Community has always been supportive, and I'd like to ask that you pray for my safety, and that I overcome my illness.
Please don't post too much while I'm away, I'd hate to be overwhelmed with thousands of posts when I get back :P Anyways, hopefully I'll be able to get access to the net there. If not, take care everyone, and see ya in a month! :)

Hello from Canton! ugh, the horror! no internet around! i just made a quick stop into an internet cafe to say hello! i still have my nuts in tact.. :P hope i'll be just as lucky for the next month... its friggin hot here! I've been able to soak in some of the culture... a bit of culture shock though. If ya people thought people in LA or whereever in the US drive bad or reckless, wait til you see it here.. people drive in all directions it seems.. pedestrians must have like 9 lives because they are so fearless.. walk through traffic... cars weave through traffic like cyclists would... just friggin crazy... i'll try and record a video of it :P
And to answer your question johnnymk, the treatment isn't for something life threatening... but western medicine doesn't have a cure for it, nor any definite way to treat it... but over here they do. so thats why I'm here...
welp, gotta get going! hope y'all take care! :)

Ooo...china, I've been to china before.
Come back soon, and don't get married there. Becuase US customs frowns on that.

Do you speak from experience? And don't worry, if anything, I'd bring 'em back to the states first. I'll bring one, or umm, several of the very cute nurses that are takin care of me, back ;) Hmm, then I'd hafta move to Utah or uhh, where was it that they allowed polygamy? :P jk.
I'm currently in my hospital room. Figured out how to get dial-up internet here. Had to purchase a calling card.
QUESTION: Does anyone have tips for haggling? I've been told that when shopping here, you should always try to haggle. I think its more so the little shops than the bigger stores. Does anyone here have experience? Someone told me to ask for it half the price, and work from there, and be ready to walk away. Any other tips?

Find a Chinese mother over the age of 40 to go shopping with you. Observe, learn, and then apply. :hihi:

when trying to bargin down the market lady, MAKE sure as much as possible not to look like a tourist! And know that the first price that they give you is always marked up like 110% Even though it might already be a deal in the states, they make 110% of the price they first quoted! If there is a people shopping there, make sure you hear the price the other guy bargined down to, and go from there! But make sure that it was a person from the community becuase they know what is too much!
I used to live in Macau China, and things there were more expensive then mainland china, so when I go to china, it would ALWAYS be a deal for me, but they still mark it up lots, so you can always get it cheaper then the quoted price! And only keep so much in you wallet, have a set price you won't go over, and tell them you only have so much in your wallet, they would usually take whats in there and be happy. Threat to leave if they don't go what you say, becuase they WANT your business, and they would usually adhear to your price. "Pricematch", there are usually some other cart thats selling the same thing as the other cart, say that they are selling it lower then you, and if you don't make it lower, I'm going to the other person.
try different variations of what works best, imo, this works best for me.

That'll be hard.. considering my chinese isn't that great to begin with... and I wear American brands like Timberland, and crap like that.
But sounds like some good tips.. I'll try and give it a shot. :)

Thats a good tactic also, shoot them!
But the local authorities frown on that kind of stuff.

Welp, went shopping once so far. Beijing (Peking) Road here in Canton.
Purchased two suits. One for about $240, another for about $200. Before you say DAYUUUM, lets convert that to USD. That's $30 USD for one suit, and $25 for the other. They certainly aren't as nice as Italian suits, but at that price, I don't think you can argue. Actually, from what the nurses here are telling me, they say I didn't bargain down enough.
Bought about five leather belts, usually sells at many retail stores for around $20-60 USD each. Purchased them for about $2.25 USD each. Probably got ripped off on that too.
Bought some wallets, leather, and also some Nylon ones as cheap gifts. About $1.25 each. I gotta sharpen my bargaining skills, I think I got ripped off. :disa:
in regards to suits...if you head over to Hong Kong there are plenty of tailors that will make you a custom-tailored suit to your needs using italian fabrics that are just as nice as the brand-name garments you find here in the states (don't forget, everything is made in Hong Kong anyway ;))
It may be slightly more expensive, but not as expensive as the $700+ you would pay here for a suit from, let's say, Brooks Brothers.

I won't be visiting HK this time around. Last time I visited HK, we went to Shen Zhen, where ya buy tons of cheap stuff. I remembered my parents getting things tailored. I was told that in Canton, it's cheaper than elsewhere. I'm sure they have tailors here too that will make it just as cheap, though I'm not sure about the fabric. The one I bought looked pretty nice. Lets just hope I can wear it more than once before it breaks. :)
As for when I'll be actually back in the states.. It was originally supposed to be on Sept 20th. Now I'll be coming back probably on Halloween. Gives me the jitters!
