Help! My Hard Drive has gone crazy! It has over a gig in bad clusters! What should I do?!? The drive is a IBM 20GB HD 72k ata/66 (OEM) and I bought it about 2 months ago on March 24th. I don't know if it was my fault or what but this problem started occuring when installed my microsoft intellimouse optical through my USB port. But my computer setup is:
Be6-2
Pentium III 500 (katmai)
256MB pc133
IBM 20GB 72k ata/66
Western Digital 8.4GB ata/66
Guillemot Geforce 256
250W power supply
(dunno if u need all that info but i put it in just in case)
Much help needed thanks!

i believe that hard drive is defective, and is dying. i would get any information you want to keep off that hard drive if you can. then, i would take it back to whereever you got it, and ask for a new one.

yep ... I figured that...but i don't think the store I bought it from will exchange it for me because:
1. Crappy store
2. They ripp people off
3. They don't take Returns/Exchanges after 5 days
I was wondering if there was a way that i could send it to IBM and they would exchange it.
*Warning* Anyone living in San Diego don't go to Computer Depot! They have lower costs but trust me its not worth it! Whenever they get a defective device they will resell it! Then when u return it they charge u a 20% restocking fee! I've learned my lesson a couple of times too many!

i dont know what ibms policy is, but you could try. they might try and make you take it back to the original store... dont hard drives come with like a manufacturers warranty or somethin?

Just about all drives are covered by mfr warranties (typically 3 yrs). Check IBM's website for a number & give them a call.
I've had OEM Western Digital drives replaced by WD over 2 years after I purchased them. I'm sure IBM has a similar policy.

I have been to Computer Depot and I will say this... I am easily more "in-the-know" about ANYTHING computer than 90% of Computer Depot's sales staff.
One guy that I know of, Ruben (I think that was his name)... actually knows his stuff and he's a pretty good salesman. If you go there, ask for him. He's the Mexican guy with the mustache and glasses.
I haven't been there in many months, but I saw that they stopped advertising on the back page of Computer Link in the Union Trib. That was the only reason I read that section... to get the prices from Computer Depot.

SO the software FIXED the drive?
That's pretty cool. No need to send it anywhere now. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'm glad u fixed it, just remember, your hard drive does have a warranty on it, so check your documentation on that. Most companies are good at honoring that stuff.
