I have a machine that just recently was upgraded from Win2k to XP pro. Ever since the upgrade, she gets an error which states "The Registry Backup Service service terminated unexpectedly". Actually I believe it is abbreviated as "regbksrvc.exe" or something like that. I tried reinstalling Windows XP using the repair option but it still has the same problem. I am trying to avoid doing a clean install b/c the user can barely afford 1/2 hour of interruption, but I will do that if I need to. I just was wondering if anyone had had this problem before and what you did to fix it.

By the way the computer is fully patched and has no virii.

Thanks,

It seems microsoft has never heard of that service or executable (neither have I for what it's worth).

What is the exact error? Also, check the Event Viewer and let me know the Event ID and Source related to that error. If I have this, I can better diagnose the issue.

szAppName : regbkpsrvc.EXE szAppVer : 0.0.0.0 szModName : unknown
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

Think I should just reformat and reinstall?

I almost wonder if it's a third-party application that's been there ever since it was a Win2K. Are there any applications installed on that machine that might do something such as a make registry backups? I'm thinking some kind of Norton SystemWorks-like software that may not be WinXP compatible.

Like SR, I have never heard of that executable. It's not native to Windows to the best of my knowledge.

Don't give up yet. You gave me the description of the event, but I need the info at the top right in Event Viewer where is says Source: and then two lines below it says Event ID:

Double agree with Seqiro, this is gotta be a 3rd party app.

Also, in the meantime, right click on My Computer and click manage. Click on the Services applet and bring up the list of services. See if the service you mentioned is in the list. If it is, double click on it and change the Startup Type to Disabled and stop the service.

Also, you can try editing the registry if you're comfortable doing so.

Click Start | Run and type Regedit.exe. When it comes up, click Edit | Find and type regbkpsrvc.EXE to find the reference to that executable. I would personally delete all references to it which would stop it from being directly loaded.

I highly recommend you make a copy of your registry before doing this.

Well I finally got it figured out thanks to you guys. Since it wasn't a Windows application I disabled the service, and then reinstalled the software that kept crashing(Statistica). After that, no more error on startup and no more software crashing.

Thanks fellas. I owe you both a brewdog
