Another online game - looks pretty cool. Anyone tried it out yet?

Digging up an old post...but figured it'd be better to recycle. :D

I've just recently started playing this (signed up in June 2006, but didn't play until now). It's completely free, but there are options for premium accounts which offer the ability to purchase land.

Anybody else here been playing it recently?

So it looks like the Sim's using real money?

How do you make money? Do you get a second life job?

I have a friend that is supposedly making like 5-10k a month playing this game and designing clothes for people that they sell in their store.

Cubsfan, it's like the sims...except it's not really a game. There is no real objective. It's more or less a "virtual world". Think of it like a virtual chatroom or a virtual social networking site. You can make money in game by winning it, being given it, gambling, working, selling items, etc. It's one of those games that actually allows you to export your in-game money to real US dollars. Although, the current rate (it changes hourly) is around $200+ "linden dollars" for every US dollar.

when secondlife first came out, i signed up for an account out of curiosity, but whether it was because my computer was a little bit outdated, my graphics card couldn't handle it, or my broadband connection wasn't up to snuff, everything loaded REALLLLLLY slow for me, so i gave it up. then i forgot about it.

then recently, i heard a report on NPR about how this "game" was taking on quite a life of its own, duplicating as near a virtual society as we've ever seen. if i remember correctly, SecondLife was working in conjunction with Reuters to even provide a SL news service based solely on the goings-on of the SL world. the reporter they interviewed was a seasoned vet who was being placed full-time on reporting SL news. FULL-TIME!! that blew me away...

and apparently the economy in the game is very similar to real world economy, with a sort of stock exchange and everything.

it kinda scares me, to be honest, but it's also quite fascinating. i'm just surprised we haven't heard more about it in general.

on a side note, after i heard the report on NPR, i logged into the game again, and everything was still excruciatingly slow, and i found the user interface to be less than intuitive. is it just my comp? or is the game just generally laggy?

also, has anyone checked out a similar game called "There"?

I too am sick of your neffing. Just because you want a custom avatar doesn't mean you can post crap all over the forums to get up to 1000+ posts. Sorry to say...but if you can't follow the rules you should maybe just stick to the code posting area.

Back on topic...Freelance, the game does still tend to be generally laggy...especially if you are located on a map that is highly populated (aka...lots of green dots on the map). As the game grows, I assume that the servers will grow too. They just got a HUGE spike in traffic due to the recent articles about the game.

ROFL, I just found a whole Stargate compound that is modeled exactly after the TV show/movie with a working Stargate.
