Hi, I just got a western digital hd from warranty, and I can't install an operating system, I tried to install both win2k and win 98 se, but both of their installation programs lock up. I put my hd ONLY into my roomates' computer, and was able to install windows 98se successfully (did not try to install win2k again). I put my hd back into my comp and it started, I installed a bunch of progs (w/o restarting in between, mind you...) and now my comp doesn't boot up windows at all, I can only boot into command prompt.... So NOW I am back at my roomates' comp, formatting and reinstalling win 98 se again. Any ideas on how I could find out what hardware/software problem I am having? :O Thanx http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif

Maybe bad IDE on the motherboard? Or maybe your CD drive/connector is bad? Or maybe it's a hacked copy of Windows? Could be any or all of the above.

What kind of motherboard is in there? Is it a socket 7, by chance?

Dave.

Oh yeah, here are my system specs:
Celeron II 533A, Clocked to 850
384 mb ram
Western Digital 27.3 gb
HP Cd Writer 9100i
Generic 48x CDROM
Monster Sound mx300
VooDoo 3 2000
Linksis 10/100 lan card

and now I have win98 installed, it can boot in my roomates' comp, but not in mine. I get a windows protection error and it says I have to restart....

Don't overclock when installing an OS.

Thanx for replying dave, any idea on what I could do? http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/redface.gif

UPDATE: Whenever I try to start windows in safe mode, it gives me a different error pretty much every time.. (Normal mode just plain freezes)
Like:
Restarting unexpectedly
Having the windows load screen stay forever (bottom bar always moving)
Error initializing device VCACHE
Invalid VxD dynamic link call to device number 3, Service B
Insufficient memory to initialize Windoes

Leon: So should I install again w/o overclock? http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/redface.gif
I am very lost and have restarted about 50 times by now http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/frown.gif

New Errors:
While initializing device CONFIGMG

Update:
My drive starts every time in my friends' comp...
HIS drive does not start in my comp....
Also, used my ide cable in his comp, still boots fine...

So can I be pretty sure that it is my mobo, or could it possibly be another device? http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/redface.gif

I agree w/ chosenfool... definitely dropp the processor back down to it's intended speed. Alos, if your still getting errors after "de-overclocking", pull all the cards out of your system except the video card. It just may be a conflict between two of the cards.
