I think the fact that if you are buying a computer from wal-mart. . . there's something wrong with you. Bad stereotypes aside I am curious myself how it is.

its supposed to be the most user friendly form of linux, but beyond that I couldnt tell you a thing about it. If you wanted a user friendly *nix, I would go OS X. Huge price difference when buying a sysstem that has it installed on though.

If you were looking to buy it, but it as the standalone OS. do not buy the walmart pc.

This is pretty cool - I might have to give it a try:

LindowsCD allows anyone to run the new and exciting LindowsOS 4.0 Operating System from any computer without installing anything. Simply pop the CD in any computer's CD tray and turn on the computer. LindowsOS will then load and run, right from the CD! This is the ideal way for Microsoft® Windows users to see what all the excitement is about with Linux and LindowsOS without removing or effecting their existing Microsoft® Windows system in any way.

It's worth a look for $30....

Jeffbx, you might want to look into
Knoppix (http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=44)
if you are wondering along those lines..

part of the advantage to linux is the filesystem...so if you don't install-install it, no filesystem= no see that advantage. i mean, sure, you can play around with it a little :P

That's the advantage I see... playing around with it, screwing it up & just rebooting to fix it. Keeps me from having to dedicate another PC to it.

another one? 0_o

if you already have it on one why don't you futz around with that one?

unless it's in production (workmachine1 :P )

I've tried VMWare but I could never get it to run linux inside windows, but maybe you could, if you wanted to experiment with linux, and not have to actually "dedicate" another pc to. it's a virtual machine :)

Oops - I worded that badly. What I meant was that I already have 2 PCs in my office & I didn't want to drag another one in here for Linux.

So I downloaded Knoppix yesterday, and I must say I'm quite impressed. Booted it up on the 'ol laptop & it seems to have recognized all of my peripherals, including my USB memory key. It came right up in a very Windows like environement & seems to be very intuitive. Even opened up some Office docs off of my hard drive with their version of Office - worked great!

The one thing that's driving me crazy is that I can't figure out how to change my screen resolution or refresh rate. I saw the display settings in the control center, but changing those didn't have any affect on my desktop. Anyone know how to do this?
