Unfortuantely as many Southern Californians are already aware, there are lots of tree/ roof rats around. Especially when there is more mild weather the numbers seem to multiply exponentially.
For whatever reason the people who owned the house prior to us planted a large almond tree close to the house. Its about five feet from the house and partially overhangs the covered pation. Now I have been hearing some noises at night in the almond tree, which I know could be any number of animals. (I have seen rats, squirrels, raccoons, crows, jays, sparrows, smelled a skunk, and similar creatures in and around it)
So for the last week my bitch has been driving me insane by constantly going up to this one tree (not the almond tree), standing on her hind paws and trying to climb it. No matter what time of day it is, she constantly tries to climb it. So today, we were trimming back the tree there and we find that there were 3 damn rats in it. Of course they scurried away before we could kill them, but one of them climbed into a decorative wall that surrounds the covered patio. So now both dogs are going crazy trying to get into the wall to get to the rats.
At this point the dogs are driving me nuts. I am about to go get a pellet gun so I can pick off the rats when I see them from a distance. I dont feel like tearing down the wall, but I might have to get Pink Floyd on its arse. G-d I hate rats. The only good thing is that they dont come into the actually house. We have never had any sign of them in the attic or anywhere else.
