View Full Version : DVD burning at 8X -- thoughts, questions, comments
Newegg Linky to Plextor PX-708A (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=0&submit=Go&description=PX%2D708A)
At $253 shipped Fedex, it seems like a good deal in comparison to other dual format burners in retail packages now.
Anandtech's Review (http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.html?i=1864) found that it can burn 4.7 GB of data in 8 or 9 minutes!
Of course they'll come down in price, but you can play the waiting game forever, so I want to see what y'all think about this pricing/performance!
Seeing that 4x burners can be found at about $100 today, I think that it would probably be a better choice. 4x burners can burn a disc anywhere from 20-30 minutes, depending on your other computer hardware. Paying $100 more to save yourself 10 minutes doesn't seem worth it, imho.
Like CD burners did in the past, once the 2nd, 3rd and new generations were released, prices started dropping more rapidly. Once the 8x become more readily available, I would expect their prices to drop in half. and 4x burner will be sub $100 by then as well.
4X single format for $100... 4X dual format for $175 cheapest at newegg right now (make sure it does 4X DVD+R and not 2.4X)
But when do DVD drives top out?
CD-ROM: 72X
DVD-ROM: 16X
CD-RW: 52X
DVD+-RW: ?
Here's a 4x dual format drive at live warehouse for $139:
NEC ND-1300A 4X DVD±RW CDRW Dual Drive (http://www.livewarehouse.com/livewarehouse/shop/product.asp?dept%5Fid=17&pf%5Fid=%7BEF057322%2D7054%2D418D%2DB482%2DC85338E2A530%7D)
They had it on sale just the other day for $125, newegg isn't ALWAYS the cheapest :)
Oooh, nice, 4X recording on both formats... now that you mention that, all you're getting in the 8X is that speed on the DVD+R.. worth $114 more? probably not :)

I'll help your argument a little bit here...you could probly say cd-roms topped out at 52x so far because the 72x used multiple lasers and had horrible problems after medium/long term use. :) So I'd agree that a 4x dvd dual format burner would be the best choice.
And here's the NEC drive for even cheaper ($113)

$11.32 shipping puts it on ice  -- people over at FatWallet always complain how $6-7 shipping kills a deal, but I'm not that picky.. hehe

Decided to buy one, lol....hadn't even really considered a dvd burner until seeing your thread inspired me...I figured even with the extra shipping it's still cheaper than the $139, I also went and purchased a modchip for mr PS2...of course to play my backed up games. :P
After you get it and try it out, post a thread on how you like it, and how long it takes to burn!

Sure thing...should be here friday if all goes as planned, but knowing my campuses mail service habbits, I probably won't get the package slip until like November.

Yay, the drive came today....I hassled them a bit because they made me fax them my drivers license and credit card, so low and behold when I opened up the FedEx package, they included a truly pirated copy of Roxio DVD creator....fresh on a CDR and hand labeled.
