Basically the premise is when you go buy something like a hamburger combo which cost roughly 6.xx you paid $10, but the guy gave you back 13.xx would you tell the guy?

had this happened to me once, didn't tell the guy just used the extra money on gas, but feel kinda guilty after thinking about it.

So would you tell the guy? if so, how much would be your limit on paying back? 3 pennies doesn't really matter.......

I would-not that hard up for $10.

Once, I bought something for under a dollar. He thought I had given him a 10, but I let him know. It's not worth the trouble for the cashier if the tray doesn't add up at the end of the day. Besides, it's not my money.

my rule of thumb is that i wouldn't give the money back if the cashier gave me over $100 in change. but since that's never happened....i would give the change back.

I'd tell them and give back the money. Cashiers make little money as is. If they messup like that, it could cost them their job. I wouldn't want to be responsible for that.

I've usually said, "I gave you a xx" and then they realize what i'm talking about.

make an attempt to give it back to them..if they dont have clue what you are talking about after three honest attempts at returning the money I'd keep it..if they are that dumb-they shouldnt be running a register.

absolutely give it back. it's not worth a mere $10, $100, or even $1000 to go around feeling guilty.

I never feel bad about keeping extra change - just as I never feel bad about sending food back to the kitchen because it's cold or tastes like crap, etc. If a person is not doing their job right, why should I suffer? I know people that never complain at restaurants because they feel bad about making someone do extra work. I saw, screw that! If they would do their job right in the first place, there wouldn't be a problem.

You should. I had a woman at a shop here in Ireland just yesterday give me 40+ Euros back instead of around 4. She somehow thought I gave her a 50 Euro note instead of a 5 (kind of hard since they are different sizes and colors). I told her about her mistake right away and while she was initially embarrassed she thanked me. It's important to do the right thing - how would you feel if the shoe was on the other foot and it was you that made the mistake?

Thats what I do. I try to be honest but after a point if they still remain clueless as to their mistake its not worth it anymroe to tell them.

I agree with the restaurnat part. I paid for my meal and i want it right. Giving me extra change is not making me suffer. I usually take my part, and tell them he gave me too much change, and i leave it on the counter
