DVD copy program?

Well I just got me the new plextor 8x dvd burner http://www.plextor.com/english/products/708A.html

I was wondering what software you guys use to copy dvd's. For legal back-ups of course :P

My friend uses DVD X-copy but it is sorta limited. Just wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions or testomonials. Thanks.

The two programs that I use are DVD Decrypter and SmartRipper.

Both programs will remove the Macrovision copy protection. With SmartRipper you can choose what parts of the DVD that you want to rip. You could rip either the widescreen or fullscreen movie, and choose which subtitles to include (if any). DVD Decrypter has an ISO mode that will rip the entire DVD to the hard drive. You can then burn that image to a DVD (assuming that it will fit).

What did you pay for the burner? Can you even get 8X DVD blanks yet?

i got it for 270ish i believe, just came out so it is expensive. The thing is the drive can write 8x on 4x media. no 8x media out yet, so 8x on 4x DVD+R, 4x on -R

If you plan on backing up any PS2 games, I'd recommend using Nero.

I use DVD Shrink (http://www.dvdshrink.org/) to shrink the movie and then burn it using Nero.

I've also used DVD Shrink and had no problems with it. The new Nero 6 Ultra Edition also has a program for doing this. The program is called Nero Recode. It looks like DVD Shrink, so maybe they bought the rights to use it.

cool, thanks. I have nero 6 ultra so I will give that a shot, and try out DVD X Copy. Just waiting for the burner to arrive :)

I've backed up over 120 movies so far with DVDXCopy Xpress--no complaints, no coasters. The compression that DVDXCX uses is excellent--even 3 hour movies don't show any obvious signs of compression. My $.02...;)

Since all y'all sound like your burning experiences are tried and true, now might be a good time to jump on the bandwagon :)

8x Plextor DVD burner's $253 shipped at Newegg, and it'll continue to drop in November, which is the next month that another 8X burner will be released... till then it'll hover at $250 i think :)

I don't have a DVD burner, but liked Clone CD and noticed that they now have Clone DVD. Anything use it? Is it any good?

I haven't tried it yet, but the makers of DVD X Copy have software for CD burners to make back-ups of DVD movies: http://www.dvdxcopy.com/products_dcp.asp

Ok so got DVD X Copy to try out from my friend.

For those of you who use it... does it usually take forever to read the disk. It was about 1 minute per % with each of my dvd drives. I assume the burning part will be fast, plextor says 8.5 minutes for a full dvd, but man it takes forever to read the thing to the hd. They need an on the fly option.

Just wanted to see how it was going for others with DVDXCopy

I use DVD X Copy Express as well with my Toshiba 4x burner. It takes me an average of about 30 minutes to rip and burn a DVD.

Yep it is. I found out that the drive defaults to limiting ripping of dvd's to 2x. There is a way to disable it though.

"the Plextor PX-708A drive can be 'unlocked' so that it will read DVD-Video discs a lot faster. You can do this by making sure the drive is empty and closed. Then press and hold the drive's eject button for about three second until the drive's LED flashes green three times. Release the eject button so that the drive's tray will open. Now insert a DVD-Video disc and voila the drive reads faster. When you eject the disc or when you cut the drive's power, the PX-708A will be reset to 2x reading again."

If anyone wants to try DVD X-Copy Express, just go to their website at 321 Studios and click on Free Trial here: http://www.dvdxcopy.com/products_dxcx.asp The demo version will let you do three trials. I just noticed they now have a Platinum version- not sure what you get with that. Gold includes regular X-Copy which lets you include everyting (may take two discs for each DVD if it uses dual layers) and Express which will trim the extras and fit the movie on a single DVD.
