here's how im thinking of trying to get it to work:

i have a sony desktop that has its own 'system recovery disks.' using the windows sticker on the back of the computer to get the cd key, i want to use the xp home disc that came with my dell laptop. will the installation work that way?

i want to minimize the amount of preinstalled software onto my comp. cuz when i use the system restore disks, it makes it preinstalls drivers that i dont need, cuz i replaced teh cards i.e. video card used to be nvidia but now is an ati.

any opinions?

Most system restore discs like that check for specific hardware, and if that hardware is not found, it will not install. You can try, but my experience has always been that restore discs only work on the computer they come with and that's it. Good luck though...

i kinda meant something else. i didnt want to use the system restore disks at all. i wanted to use just a windows xp home disk to install the OS onto the comp, but am wondering cuz the xp home disk came bundled with my dell laptop. it only has xp home on it i think...

Recent Dell software only works on Dell machines.

yep, I have a copy of Power DVD that came with a Dell drive... It will only install on a machine with a dell BIOS.

you can download some "hacks" that replace a file on the dell CD to skip the Dell BIOS check. This would allow you to install the software onto your system.

Does the sony have a home version of xp too?

the sony only has the system restore disks. i just gave up with using the dell disk and just used the restore disks and uninstalled all the stuff that i didnt need. i was only reformatting to try to get rid of a slow shut down (as you may have read that i experienced and explained in another thread).

thanks for all your guy's help :D
