Yeah. It sucks doesn't it? I get mad every time I hear a DSL commercial on radio http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/mad.gif (I am too far from my local CO to get DSL)

I feel for ya. I went from a T2 at UCLA to my 56K I'm stuck with now. What I wouldn't give for a cable modem, and my stupid city government doesn't understand the need for it. Once DSL gets to $30/month I'm on it!!!

Oh the joys of DSL http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I jumped from using Netzero, Tritium, Worldspy, etc. to spending $50/month for DSL. What a jump and what a difference. If you can survive without food, I'd recommend getting DSL http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hey Starving, I have a suggestion for you. Not to be cruel, just advice. 2 months before you move out, start cutting down your online hours every day. Then on the last 2 weeks in dorms, switch to 50% modem dialup, 50% ethernet. Hopefully this will cut the pain. Remember, the first step is acceptance of your loss (high speed internet access).

Oh man, I cried for a week. Seriously though, I was bummed. Back when I went to UCLA we were trading MP2s. Shows you went I went there hehe. I graduated '97 with Bio, but was in dorms all the way to '96.

I think I'm just going to move into my dad's work (TRW) for the summer and leech those Satellite connections. Damn, their RAID systems could fill my 127 GB of drivespace in a few minutes hehee http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yea I kno... no more pings under 100 after I leave here... I'll be shooting at people's shadows with dial-up on Counter-Strike.

geez guys, stop your whining, I'm running on a 28.8k dialup still... can't afford anything better than that at the moment.. and cable access in .au isn't great atm (price wise at least)

The worst is when youre supposed to be running 56K, except your connection seems way too slow. And you check the actual connection, and it is 32K. Welcome to my life. This after a year with T1 also. So happy, my frat house Im living at next year is getting T1.

True, but we've also had the pleasure of experiencing 1200bps, 9600bps, and 14.4k modems.

You must be awfully young if you've used 56k all your life.

I had a T3 with dual OC3 backbone last year. Then I went to nothing for a few weeks, and back to a whooping 28.8, now I'm on a cable modem that can d/l at over 10Mbps at times. In about 4 days, I'll be back on a 28.8. That's what sucks about college life. Quitting cold like that hurts alot.

I'm not close enough to my CO to get dsl either. Then on top of that they say that cable won't be available for 9 months. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/mad.gif Sigh. Life sucks when you can't get bandwith. Revive the 56k modem. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Hey, hapoo! Don't skip out on the 2400bps! ah, and before that 2400bps speed demon, I had to directly connect my phone to my comp. But it was great none the less. I could call my friend and type "Hi". five minutes later I'd get a response, "Hello." The conversation went so much faster then it did on the phone.

You guys think you're all that hehe. Dude, I remember using a 300bps modem in 3rd grade on my Apple IIc. The modem was nearly the size of a 15" monitor http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif Plus I had to "boot up" the modem and it required warming up time!

Now somebody's going to come in and whine about how Alexander Gram Bell used to do these experiments...

No, but when I was two, I stuck two keys in an electrical outlet, which didn't really take any time to warm up. That may explain my mental condition now...

dang, 300bps that's slowww. i never knew that even existed. how long was this ago?
i'm like one of the youngest ones in this forum, but just 2 more years and i'll get my first T1 experience.

colossus

Yeah that 300bps one that I used with my Apple had it set up like that. Ahh man, reminding me of the Apple - a machine that had no HD and booted off a floppy, yet it only crashed on me once in 8 years of Word Processing use. Sometimes when Word2k goes bonkers I long for simplicity. I doubt I would ever want the 300bps modem again though. I think it was a Hayes series.

heh, at least you where lucky enough to have an apple, our first computer was a kaypro, a "portable" computer that was 25+ pounds and the size of a mid-tower case. Luckly i didn't have to use this one cause i was really small at the time, but my brother spent hours on it. I got to use an Amiga 2000 for my first computer http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif

your college had an oc-3? dang. my college only has multiple t1's. though it's still speedy on my 10mbps connection to their network. now if only they installed switches instead of hubs...

heh heh, 900 kbps? i can hang with that; my high speed transfer record is somewhere around 3.5 megs per second, so there! And what is this about a "slow connection?" What is that? I haven't heard those words together in almost...8 months. I don't want to have to say them again this summer!

Slow, you wanna talk slow. Slow is when you pay for a damn 56K modem and only get a 21600 connect cuz it's raining outside and you know the line is full of snap crackle pop but damn GTE denies it!

I wanna go to my dad's work where you can transfer a DVD's worth of data in 1 minute over their fiber http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif

ironically enough...anyone with a slow connection would have to wait a long long time to load this thread. I find that to be very humorous, even though it opened for me after about 1/2 a second of loading time.
