What's up with people casting black people for white comic book roles? The Kingpin in Daredevil was Michael Clark Duncan and now Halle Berry as Catwoman? I do'nt know, the characters to me just aren't the same that way

what's wrong with that? who said they HAD to be white? i thought mcd played a very good kingpin. and did you SEE the picture i posted? how could you go wrong with that?
To me, it makes the characters unbeleivable, like when casting a girl in a guys role in a high school play. Sure the girl might have talent but she's playing a man's role and it takes away from teh character.

BTW... "Eartha Kitt" (who is BLACK) played the first "Catwoman" in the campy 60's show (and was later replaced by a white lady after folks complained)... so who says that Catwoman must be WHITE?
Geez... you startin' to sound a lil "discriminate" there UT. :hmm:
Memo, has already stated that he's racist.
And as far as I remember (memory jogging here) but when the comic was drawn it was a white character. I think that is more of the Memo (please correct me if I'm wrong here) is saying. It was originally intended to be a ______ woman, so it should be acted/preformed by a _____ woman.
Personally, i agree on my last statement. If Catwoman had been drawn as a black female and they tried to put a white female in it would be the same situation (At least for me).
Not that it matters, I won't go see this. Almost all of the movies i've seen based on comic books/games sucked :(

Eartha Kitt was great. Made a great catwoman, especially when she was purring. But Julie Numar was cuter.

some of this stuff is marketing. they sit around talking about what kind of person is more likely to draw a bigger audience. = changes in the race of a particular character.
Sorry Nija but i'm not racist and never have said I was. I don't think this is a matter of racism either. For me, Catwoman is a white girl as in the comic books. Having Halle Berry playing the role detracts from the characater IN MY OPINION. Halle Berry is no doubt a talented actress and no doubt beautiful. As far as more black comic book characters, sure, go ahead and write them, and if you make a movie about them, CAST A FREAKING BLACK PERSON. Although preferably hollywood would quit making stupid comicbook movies :)

Hey, I say if Jesus can be "drawn" white (even though he was most likely dark complected because of the region), then why not a comic book character?

WHat about Black Lightening, he was kinda cool. I have some of his old comic books.
I don't care if Catwoman is black white or chinese, if she captures the magic of the character. I thought the King Pin was played alright. Couldn't think of someone else. But from the picture alone I would say she does not capture that Catwomaness. But then again I didn't think from pictures alone that Hugh Jackman would do a good Wolvie. I say she should stick to storm and only Storm.

Hey, I say if Jesus can be "drawn" white (even though he was most likely dark complected because of the region), then why not a comic book character? Reminds me of when an artist made Jesse Jackson with blond hair and blue eyes. Well some blacks got offended and tried to destroy the piece. Guess they thought it was a commentary on Jacksons racial attitude. After all if Jackson was a white guy his views and actions would not be looked upon highly nor applauded. :dodgy:
http://digitalarts.ucsd.edu/~gkester/Essays/rhetorical.html
One of the public projects was a billboard size painting by New York artist David Hammons, showing Jesse Jackson in white face, blond hair, and blue eyes, with the slogan, "How Ya Like Me Now?" The painting referred to the difficulty Jackson was having, as an African-American, in getting the Democratic party to acknowledge the fact that he spoke for, and to, a significant bloc of potential voters through his "Rainbow Coalition."
As the work was being installed a number of young black men in the area first confronted the installation crew, left, and then returned with a sledgehammer to destroy the piece.
http://www.tribes.org/reviews/nd_david_hammonds_concert_0103.html
I remember reading from Time to Steve Cannon about Hammons' "How Ya Like Me Now?" the piece vandalized while on exhibit in D.C. by a couple of concerned, self-styled, black community leaders. They took sledgehammers to his sheetmetal painting of Jesse Jackson with blond hair and blue eyes, not knowing the artist nor, apparently, his intent. Cannon cracked up, "Don't those dummies know that painting's worth more money now?" Hammons, in a nod to the vandals, later exhibited the work with a rope around it, its supports being a half-dozen upright sledgehammers, one with a package of Lucky Strike affixed to the handle.http://www.newmuseum.org/vkp/artworks/66.jpg

Not quite the same......no one has seen jesus (well besides in a fogged up bathroom window or a misformed donut of sorts). Catwoman is a character in a comic book with DRAWINGS.
and by the way, jackson looks like a total fruitcake as a whitey

Memo said he is racist but there is still time for him to figure it out. At least he's honest.....er used to be about it. Maybe he's racist toward whites.....
I actually was pissed that McFarlane let them change the color of his characters in Spawn. Its not like having more whites helped the movie. Have a little a balls and tell the fn casting people to cast the story the way it was penned.
Duncan was the best part in DD. I thought Electra should of been more Italian or Greek looking. Carmen Electra with blue/ black hair or that girl from Blade 2.
Catwomen to me can be either since I grew up watching Kitt play her. I loved Michelle in it and would love to see several different females in that costume. Berry looks hot and will probably play it right which is more important than playing her 'white.'

Yeah, let's take it a step even further and make Superman a blond. Or even worse, Starbuck from Balltestar Galacticia a woman.

I said I was racist in general by the way, i have stereotypes but I dont believe any race is inferior directly because of their race, I think that's what racism is, ignorance. I don't think my ideas are ignorant, they're just generalizations of behavior and observations. That has nothign to do with thinking Halle Berry is a bad casting call for catwoman though.

hmmm... i think that raises a valid point. people are annoyed because they're saying the actresses race shouldn't affect your view of the character, but yet what if we changed something like hair color? personally, if they released a Superman movie with a blonde actor, yeah, i'd throw a fit. i've read too many comics, and have the image of supermain ingrained in my head, that he should have black hair, with that cute little curl. similarly, would poison ivy (from batman) be the same w/o her red hair? seems like it would be the same with race... if you're used to seeing catwoman as a white woman with long flowing black hair and blue eyes, and that's how you've always pictured her in your mind, hally berry fails to meet that expectation.

Pretty much they didn't want to pay BL's creator (Tony Isabella) his royalties back '78 when "Vulcan" was introduced ...so they created their own version. If you notice... BL LOOKS like a what a black superhero should look like... Black Vulcan just looks "ghey" in my opinion as I said earlier.

michael clarke (sp?) duncan in daredevil worked. it might not have been drawn up like that back in the day, but what white actor would have had that commanding a presence? you need a large powerful guy in that role, and duncan did a good job with it. personally i was more impressed with colin farrell's performance, but duncan was a good fisk.
