If TimeWarner does this, I am switching to DirecTV but $55/month is a lot of money (for 4 rooms).
It's not surprising that carriers are dropping some channels off their basic cable. For them to obtain the licenses for those channels is pretty expensive.
In Cox' case, their contracts with both Fox Sports and ESPN expire next year. Fox Sports' asking price is 35% higher than their current contract and ESPN's is 20% higher. Those two channels make up 8% of Cox' viewers, but 30% of their programming costs.
You can complain that Cox is dropping those channels, but think about it this way. If they do sign licensing agreements to get those 2 channels back, you figure Cox will have to offset these expenses by charging their customers more. Are you ready to pay more for your basic cable?

I had Cocks cable...now I just have cable internet, and I wish I didn't have to go through them to have it. They are snoopy, and warned that they can kill my service if they want since I use a router/firewall. Poops.

Hey! Then I'd never get to see touching stories of love and betrayal! Also, I'd miss Xanadu.
