I bought three of those (one for me and two for a co-worker) today and I use the extra 10% $899+ order. You could only use either one, MIR or free memory upgrade. I rather take the $100 and buy myself one stick of 512MB PC3200 RAM.

Does anyone know what and where is the best place to go for memory for this server? Is it better to go dual channel and if you by say either a 1gig or 512 kit (pairs) is the 128 pieces useless or will it still work in the machine? Any input is appreciated. Thanks

I ended up getting two 512MB of PC3200 memory from www.newegg.com. Here's a link to the page - http://www.newegg.com/app/viewprodu...lo%2Ctechnology It's at the bottom of the page.
I had bought this server earlier when they had the $199 upgrade to a 3.2GHZ P4. I've upgraded the memory, audio, and video. I ordered the NEC ND-1300A (black) which does DVD +/-. Link is here - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=5&manufactory=1326&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1 Price was $124.99 with free shipping.
I bought another one yesterday with the 2.4GHZ P4. I'll take the 128MB from my other one and add it to this one. This computer will probably be my HTPC.

Crucial (http://www.crucial.com) is also a great place to look. Their RAM is less than half the cost that Dell quotes for this machine.

hehe, also, they will list the true limit of the machine. Dell insists my laptop only goes to 512mb, but the 1100 can actually go to a gig.

does the ram need to be ECC/registered?
the ram that they give you is registered ram.

I don't think so since this motherboard is not a real server one. You could use non-ECC unbuffered RAM.

apart from the fact that i really don't need a new computer, i'm pretty psyched to have ordered it. :)
despite the free best data modem from officemax.com, it looks like i'll have to spend some cash for Microsoft XP and a video card.

I don't think so but I wouldn't mix ECC and non-ECC RAMs. I would just use one stick of 512MB.

If it is for the 800Mhz P4, I would suggest getting dual memory. It is reccomended by Intel (for best Hyperthreading results). Although ECC is not neccessary.

So it comes with 128mb and I want to add 512mb. What is the best way to add this amount of memory? I know the 400sc slot setup, but not really sure the best way to upgrade so that I have room to upgrade with more RAM later. 400SC Slots = 4 (2 banks of 2)

for best performance use a pair of matched sticks. dont combine a 128 and 512.
and if you dont use the 128 stick it comes with, sell it back to dell. they'll give you a hell of a lot more than the fool who offered $20 shipped.

Yes it does. I have 8 of these and they all just beep when you put in the none registered type.
The poweredge 400sc takes standard non-buffered, non-ecc, non-registered memory just fine.
I'm using the standard DDR400 memory from a Dell Dimension 8300 on my PowerEdge 400SC.
It uses the same motherboard as the Precision 360, so take your pick on the memory:

My co-worker bought the 512MB PC3200 K-Byte RAM and it works. He didn't try the dual channel so I don't know about that.

I called Dell about this and they will only take back the RAM if you buy new RAM from them as a trade-off. This isn't such a good deal, neither, because they may be giving you back more than market value for the 128 but you are buying the replacement RAM at more than market value, too.
Too many people sold back too much RAM at one time and someone pulled the plug on it.

call 1-877-773-3355 and press 4 for all options. you might get a tech from bombay but it still works :). you don't have to buy anything from them. just tell them you're upgrading your server and want to return the memory and harddisk (to my knowledge, dell doesn't record anything else on the machine with a "refundable price" - although some have tried swapping the cd for cd-rw). i got $60 and $90 respectively - it works out well b/c i recently bought a 120gig for $60.

I just got my second 400SC. FedEX tried to deliver it yesterday but I wasn't here. It was quicker to pick it up today than wait for delivery.
I put the 128MB I took out of the first one and added it to this one. I have 1GB (2 X 512MB) in the first one.
My original order for this 400SC was for the 2.4GHZ, but I decided to upgrade to the 2.8GHZ. I called the day after I ordered and asked if I could upgrade. She said yes but the price to upgrade the CPU had changed. I said that it was $100 yesterday, and she agreed to that price. I then got an e-mail with the new price, which had jumped from $452 to $693! I sent an e-mail back saying this price was wrong, but I didn't receive any e-mail replies. I called Dell and talked to some guy and told him what happened. He said he would fix the price ($559).
When I went to the Dell website later, I now had two orders, one for $559 and one for $452. Both orders showed identical configurations (with the 2.8GHZ). I called and cancelled the more expensive order. So I will end up paying $352 after rebate. My first 400SC with the 3.2GHZ was $539 after rebate.

I had two pieces of the memory one that I received with my server and one that I bought in a fourm for $20. I was going to initially going to use them, but found out that they didnt work correctly with my NonECC memeory. I called yesterday and they gave me a reference number for the stick of memory that shipped with my computer. They said I had to pay for shipping and to call and give them the tracking number when I shipped it. I asked them about returning the other piece, but since it wasnt part of the system they said they couldn't. I figured I would call back and try again. This time when I called I gave them the same info that I wanted to return the stick of memory that came with my server. I was expecting them to say "Sr. you already have a reference number in our system to return the memory", surprisingly they put me on hold while they created the return ticket. This time I was not given a reference number and the lady said someone will come out to pick it up. I asked if I get a reference number and she said that I didn't need one. I have already sent out the one pieces via UPS. I guess I wait now and see if anyone from UPS/FedEX comes to my door for a pickup.
Good thing Dell and its' associates have a handle on their standards and policies!

most of you probably did buy more memory to upgrade. nevertheless, i want to point out from my experience with this 400sc that it doesn't work well with only 128MB. For the life of me, I coudn't figure out why my warcraft III took ages to load maps, get connected to a BNET game, significant delay between cutscenes and playmode etc... well, added a 128MB for a total of 256mb dual channel and it makes an entire world of difference; it is now seamless.
before this, the computers i've used have been old ones running 98 and ME and 128mb used to be more than sufficient - i guess this XP really eats up the ram.

Has anyone been able to get the built in ethernet in this thing to go online? I tried every driver on dell AND intel and nothing happens. Emails to dell resulted in suggestions to return the system as it is not "offically" supported to go online or so they say. Interestingly, I put a lan card I had in, and it worked fine. Problem is, I absolutely need every single PCI slot. Appreciate any help greatly.

Mine worked no problem. Maybe your computer has a problem. send it back.
Also I wanted to remind people that you can get 5.1 surround out of this machine by installing the Intel drivers and that headphone jack will become a center/sub jack. =)

I am using Windows XP. I was not able to use the cd as windows xp was not an option on it. I used just straight windows xp drivers for everything. Of course the network adaptor was not recognized, so I tried dling and installing them seperate. I tried the ones from the dimension 8300 as it has a similar board with no luck, then i tried all the ones for the 875p chipset from intel to no avail. My computer isnt on a network per se, but it is connected to a router/switch combo, then that goes to the cable modem. Can someone maybe send me their driver? I imagine the LAN part of the ethernet works probably, but I get no WAN. I really appreciate your help guys!

Its weird. I tried using the bootable support cd and taking the drivers off there (which i tried before actually). All the drivers seem like they work. In the network configurations, it says enabled. But it just doesnt load anything. When I plug the cable in the pci card, it disconnects the built-in and enables the pci, and it works fine, go back to the built-in and it doesnt work. Something must not be configured properly, I dont know.

I loaded the Intel NIC driver from the CD. WHat you do is this: after booting up into XP, open the device manager (open up "my computer", rightclick on the window that pops up and select properties, got to the HARDWARE tab, click on device manager). in the device manager, click on network adapters - if you really don't have it installed, it will show questions marks. clicking on it will prompt you to install the drivers; insert the dell cd and browse to the cd path. XP will then search for the NIC driver automatically and install. If you already have something installed, you can UPDATE Driver and again, specify the CD path from which to install.
btw, the driver, when correctly installed, should be identified as the " Intel PRO/1000 MT" Network Connection. Driver Version 7.0.30.0, driver date 3/3/2003
my LAN works with this so it does work.

Yeah, I have installed the drivers like that, but it just doesn't connect. The bios says the nic is on too, btw, I just dont know what could be wrong. Maybe its something with the fact that I have a router. The drivers are always installed properly, and the networks has a status of "enabled", but ie and aol, etc, just dont load up with it.

Bissond,
You're SOL. Pick up that $10 Mad Dog card listed in the posts on this board & call it a day. Technically the i875p board supports 5.1 but its missing a critical capaciter on the board (Dell being cheap?)
At any rate, hop on over to the boards at aaltonen.us for painstaking detail on how people discovered this.
In short, save yourself some pain & buy the $10 soundcard if you want 5.1.
