registering a webspace domain?

ok I'm such a newbie at this, so any help would be very appreciated!


If I want to start a website with its own name and everything (www.daFunkyUnit.net "It's Dot Com!"), for example, how do I go about it?

How do I set it up? What do I need? (like, I don't need to set up a web server box on my end, do I?) Is there some company that I pay a monthly "lease" for? How much space would I get? etc....

You need two things:

A domain name from a registrar
Webhosting service

Domain registrars include register.com (http://www.register.com) , RegisterFly (http://www.registerfly.com) and GoDaddy (http://www.godaddy.com), among many, many others. Prices and services may vary - including your rights to the domain name that you register.

Webhosts are very abundant as well. Search the forums here, google it or ask around to find the best package for what you need. You are simply paying for space on the server's hard drive and for monthly bandwidth, so there is no need for your own equipment.

I use Domainsite.com for registering the name and Powweb.com for hosting at $7/month.

It's pretty straight forward. Just check the FAQ of the hosting company to find out the names/addresses of their DNS servers, then when you register the name you'll be asked for DNS servers. Plug in that info and you're all set.
