Sounds of bear attack caught on tape (http://www.msnbc.com/news/977560.asp)
ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Oct. 8 — The graphic sounds of a deadly bear attack in the Alaska wilderness were captured on tape, revealing one of the victims’ frantic screams as he tried to fend off the beast, authorities said Wednesday.
TROOPER CHRIS HILL said the tape suggests a video camera was turned on just before Timothy Treadwell was attacked at his campsite. His girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, was later mauled to death by a bear. The recording is audio only, and the screen is blank for all six minutes.
“They’re both screaming, she’s telling him to play dead, then it changes to fighting back. He asks her to hit the bear,” Hill said. “There’s so much noise going on. I don’t know what’s him and what might be an animal.
“It’s pretty disturbing. I keep hearing it in my mind.”
The remains of Treadwell, 46, and Huguenard, 37, both of Malibu, Calif., were found Monday at Katmai National Park and Preserve on the Alaska Peninsula. Treadwell was known for approaching, even touching, bears in the wild.
An air taxi pilot who arrived to pick up the couple contacted the National Park Service and troopers to report a brown bear was apparently sitting on top of human remains in the camp.
A ranger shot and killed a large brown bear when the animal charged at them through the dense brush. Troopers and rangers later killed a smaller bear apparently stalking them.
Hill said he was stunned by what he heard on the tape.
“The audio starts while he’s being mauled and ends while he’s being mauled,” Hill said.
Treadwell may have heard a bear and asked Huguenard to turn on the camera, which was found with the lens cap on and packed in a camera bag, Hill said.
“At first, she sounds kind of surprised and asks if it’s still out there. I’m not sure if she was asking if a bear was outside their tent or in the brush,” Hill said. “The audio stops because the tape runs out. Otherwise, it probably would have captured the whole thing.”
Hill said he will attempt to transcribe the tape. But there are no plans to make the recording or transcripts public, trooper spokesman Greg Wilkinson said.
Troopers recovered video and still photography equipment as well as three hours of earlier video footage from the site, across Shelikof Strait from Kodiak Island.
Much of the footage is close-up shots of bears. Some scenes show bears no more than a few feet from Treadwell, co-author of “Among Grizzlies: Living With Wild Bears in Alaska.” Others show a more timid Huguenard leaning away as bears come close to her on the bank of a river.

You know on stories like this if you read real closely you can usually tell right where the big mistake was made.

I don't go anywhere near a wild bear or even a trained one unless it's in a cage.

Well, I would, but only if I have a gun.

forgive my awful, awful prejudices, but...
they were both from malibu CA. no wonder they were so friggin STOOPID.
land of fake boobs, asphalt, privelege, shallowness, devoid of wildlife and natural things in general... it probably never occured to them that there was something dangerous about going near a bear. probly thought they could just sue someone if they got hurt
you'd never see a midwesterner (someone who has broken a bone while climbing a tree, been told to stay away from the bidness end of a harvester, has picked ticks off himself, maybe even worked for a living :P ) do something like that.

with all due respect, you are way out of line here. this man was neither stupid or careless. i'm 100% positive the thought of suing someone never entered his mind. he certainly knew the risks he was taking.
he lived among the bears for years and wrote a book about his experiences. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0345426053/qid=1065711030/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-5204743-0859904?v=glance&s=books) he was a champion for bears; an advocate for protecting their ever shrinking natural habitats.
he was well respected by his comrads, and his death is a tragedy.

i'm mostly being silly... i don't think the city and state he came from has much to do with it.
the only thing that i wrote in my last post that i truly believe is that HE IS STOOPID. he WAS stupid and careless. that's great that he was a bear and bear habitat advocate, more power to him. but loving bears is one thing, approaching them to touch them without a loaded gun cocked and ready to shoot is stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid. he thought he was invincible, like a kid who decides to ride a skateboard down concrete stairs without safety equipment. he took his girlfriend - someone who HADN'T lived among bears - with him. that was kighly irresponsible, careless, and STUUUUUUUUUPID.
edit: a few more thoughts... he could have gotten all the footage he wanted SAFELY with a zoom lens and a safety cage (similar to the shark cages you see on discovery channel's shark week.) but he obviously had a romanticized notion about living among the bears, being one with brother bear, etc. it's entirely likely that he had some vague notion of the bears having some amount of respect for him, familiarity with him, that they would somehow "see it in his eyes" that they should not attack him, that he knew what he was doing and would not get attacked because he alone had this special understanding of how to handle bears. (if that wasn't the case, then he simply had a death wish... safety precautions were in order and he DID NOT TAKE THEM.) wouldn't be surprised if the guy watched too damned many movies like "the horse whisperer." of course his death was a tragedy, but that don't make 'im not STOOPID.
and plenty of midwesterners get mauled by bears every year... mostly trying to feed the cute lil black bear cubs, and then momma bear gets pissed...

Well, I would, but only if I have a gun. I read a long time ago, and I cannot confirm how true it is, about new forest rangers in the Alaskan wilderness being issued their equipment for the first time. The senior ranger hands a brand new Smith & Wesson 44 Magnum to the new ranger and suggests that he take a file to the front sight and shave it down flat. "Do the bears really come so close that you don't need the front sight?" "No, you do that so it doesn't hurt so much when the bear is shoving it up your nose!"

if it smells your food and wants your food, just get away from your food. if it's looking at all timid, bang pots, move wildly, try to look as big and erratic and scary as possible. if you've already gotten in its personal space, its looking at you and it's pissed, you can play dead and hope that works... sometimes it does, often it doesn't, because if a bear decides it wants to hurt you, it will.
Have you heard the story the Montana park rangers tell the tourists? Tourists are warned to carry pepper spray and bells. One guy asked the ranger how they would know if they were in bear country. The ranger replied "watch for bear poop with bells and pepper spray cans"
Just goes to show, that no matter how careful you are, animals are animals, and it's not smart to get too close.

Well, the only time I've heard of filing a site down is so that you can draw it more quickly/smoothly and it doesn't catch. The last thought I want running through my mind if a bear has me pinned: "What the hell is my gun caught on?"
And blueindian, as much as I would like to have sympathy for this guy, the book he wrote might as well have been an autobiography on lunch meat. :(
