TEHRAN, Iran -- An Iranian court has sentenced a convicted child rapist to eight death sentences and 173 lashes, the judge in the case said Thursday.

Mohammad Ali Firouzi, 34, was sentenced under Islamic law this week to hang in each of the eight rape counts he confessed to, Judge Karam Ali Bahrami told The Associated Press.

The court ruled that Firouzi will be hanged in public, a rare occurrence in Iran. Convicts are hanged in public in Iran only if a court deems that their offenses injured public sentiments.

Firouzi was also found guilty of raping 15 other children, plus kidnapping and molesting 36 others.

The judge said he sentenced Firouzi to 10 years in jail for the molestation and robbery charges, plus 15 years imprisonment for kidnapping, but under Iranian law the execution would be carried out first.

Firouzi will also receive 173 lashes -- 74 for robbery and molestation and 99 for the 15 rape counts he did not confess to.

He has 20 days to appeal. The Supreme Court must decide whether to uphold the death sentences.

The defendant pleaded guilty to the eight rape counts during a trial that began Oct. 1 in the southern Iranian town of Marvdasht, where the crimes occurred.

Police said they received the first victim filed a complaint in early 2002.

One of the victim's mothers, who refused to be identified, told the AP in a telephone interview that most of the children were between the ages of five and nine.

The problem is he's dead after the first time. They should revive him in between hangings.

Well we kinda do the same thing here when we say someone is sentenced to 5 life terms.

Hmmm, I hope they do the lashing before the hanging . . . otherwise, what's the point? :D

haha, or "fake" hang him. first six times don't tie the rope up top, so he just falls to the ground. by then he's thinking it'll be the 8th time when he dies. instead, the hangers pull a fast one -- it's the seventh "hanging" where he dies.

that's not cruel enough.

most of the time you don't die from the hanging, you die from having your neck broken. So get around the problem of dropping him, and LIFT him by his neck a bunch of times, and then drop him when he passes out. DAYS of torture for him, while DAYS of pleasure for those affected.

Geez, I should work for the interrogation unit :P

I'd think twice about having sex with Halle Berry if that was the punishment.

hell yea he sooo derserves it..
this is how they do it
they have like a doc check his heat beat or whatever... once its low or maybe even stopped they take him off .. hopefully if the heart stopped they try to start it again..
then after a couple days hes hanged again !!
and thats the way to deal with child rapists..

hmmm...173 lashes and 8 hangings for the same guy? It going to be a long day when it comes to execute his punishment.

I'm sensing a family bonding moment on that day.

Ok... now I'm not someone that has a problem with punishing child rapists... or even against public execution for that matter... but killing a guy 8 times is just stupid. Let's face it... you can only kill a guy once if you are proficient at it. Now... if they want to lash him, castrate him, jail him, bury him near an anthill, heck, even make him watch the show coupling...I have no problem with that... but saying that you're going to kill him by hanging 8 times is pointless.
Personally, my favorite punishment in these cases is good old life imprisonment in a maximum security jail after having the words insert here tattoo'd on his thighs... but that's just my opinion.

If iran had conniving lawyers like the US this guy would be out on the streets looking for more kiddies.... Thank god someone knows how to deal with pedophiles and sickos.

It's not even the conniving lawyers really... they're just playing with the rules they were given. The core of our problem with our legal system being too lax comes from the fact that deep down we're all worried about being in that situation and so want there to be a way for us to get off. It's our selfishness and cowardice that screwed the system up.

yeah we shouldn't be progressive and stay with the whole,'you guilty until proven innocent' scheme.

Our Legal system may be busted, but I think it's way better than almost every one out there...

then again, maybe it is the way it is because we can never have perfect information about what occured, and most of us would rather err on the side of having some guilty people on the streets than some innocent people executed or imprisoned.

mentally ill people will confess to things they didn't do. even a confession isn't perfect evidence.

better hope you never piss off an underage girl with enough brains to concoct a believable story about you raping her...

I completely agree with this.

I really do think that is the case. However, if that is the decision that we've made as a society, I do not think it's fair for us to attack lawyers because they are fulfilling their role in it. That was all I was getting at. If we would rather let 10 guilty people run free than put one innocent person behind bars then we have no right to complain that there are too many guilty people running free. I don't have a problem with the concept... I have a problem with setting up a system and then blaming it for doing what we told it to do.
As for the no system being perfect... yeah. There is no perfect system. However, I don't see how it benefits anyone to set up a system and then be so scared of it messing up that we make it completely ineffectual so that if anything happens we're safe.

better hope you never piss off an underage girl with enough brains to concoct a believable story about you raping her...
I completely agree with this. Most of my friends do not agree with me but I have serious problems with the way this whole issue is dealt with in our legal system but that's not a talk for this thread.
