"Alan Abelson's column in Barron's passes along a theory of a grand shift in the personal computer realm, courtesy of High-Tech Strategist newsletter editor Fred Hickey. According to the scenario, Dell (DELL), IBM (IBM) and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) have moved to back the open-source Linux operating system and alternate suppliers of computer chips, which would put pressure on Microsoft (MSFT) and Intel (INTC) to cut prices and deliver more favorable terms. Hickey says Microsoft has been doing just that, cutting prices on large software bids."

I can't wait until that day when I could buy either a Barton or AMD 64 computer from Dell.
You'll be waiting a long time.
Dell rejects AMD's Opteron and Athlon 64 chips (http://www.anandtech.com/news/shownews.html?i=20672)

Not likely. If you'll recall, they used to offer linux as an OS choice with windows ME/2000 etc.. It's nowhere to be found nowadays.

Yeah, they still will ship servers pre-loaded with Linux (Red Hat, I believe). PCs & workstations you'll have to do on your own.
