Columbus Day
Across the world,
Columbus,
you dreamt your wild schemes.
You slept on decks
of sailing ships;
you nailed the wooden beams.
You coaxed west wind
into the sails;
you mended tattered seams.
Across the world,
Columbus,
you brought your wild dreams.
~Myra Cohn Livingston

I just wanted the damn day off. :hmm:
:cheers: to the guy who "found" our country.
:pfft: to not letting me have the day off
What good is a holiday if you don't get the day off? That's right, NOTHING. Worthless holiday. Columbus wasn't looking for America anyway, and besides didn't Amerigo Vespucci get here before him? And it's not like there weren't people here already (native Americans and such)...

It's a holiday for students & teachers (up to HS) and federal/state employees. I still had to get up early and drag my a$$ to work.

blah blah blah... there's nothing new under the sun. watson and crick didn't really discover dna, either, and and that one white dude wasn't the first to the top of everest. the wright brothers did not single-handedly invent flight. nobody's reality lives up to the legend, and most people here, at least, know that (and the ones that don't can't be convinced anyway...)
we like our legends. it's no fun to celebrate a textbook's worth of information giving due credit to the hundreds of individuals and dozens or hundreds of events that led up to something, as well as making sure we list off every fault of each individual invovled so as not to pretend they were better than they actually were. nobody cares to know that much about every damned thing that ever happened. that's what legends are for. a smart person knows it's a legend and takes it for what it's worth.
point is, he was a singularly motivated individual who put together one heck of an expedition.

the vikings did land somewhere near newfoundland... and the natives scared the bajeezus out of em, the countryside was harsh, and they went home after a year or three.
and, no, they didn't leave behind any runestones.
and it was erik the red's expedition. originally from norway, eh and his father had to leave because of their involvement in some killings... tehy went to iceland. from there, he discovered greenland, lived there for three years, returned to iceland with the tale, and then discovered "vinland" - north america, named for the wild grape vines they found there.
one of the scariest things, apparently, was the women warriors, who made some eerie war cries and beat at their bare chests with blades (in medieval scandinavia, it was considered lewd for even a man to expose much of his chest, let alone a woman...)
one of his sons, leif, known as leif the lucky after surviving a capsizement at sea by clinging to debris, was also a colorful dude...
