Home Alarm systems

This is based on my thread yesterday "Just got robbed." I just had ADT come by and for about $400 I can get a basic system and for 27 bucks a month ADT will monitor it and call the cops if someone intrudes. Are home alarms effective, what are your experiences and which ones are better?

I think it does work...but mostly it give you a peace of mind. WE've had it for a while now, and I never felt that I was unsafe. After living by myself for a while, I don't have that feeling of security anymore. It's a good thing to have.

i think it's kinda like car alarms. people with the alarms still have their cars ripped off. same with houses. most burglars prob wont' mess with you. but the ones that REALLY want to get in, still will. but it does give you a better peace of mind.

one drawback: be careful of false alarms. it pisses off the neighbors, and one too many will get you a penalty from the police dept.

The thing I like about the alarm concept is that if it goes off, there is going to be very uncomfortable 140 decibile siren going off. Not that my neighbors would report anything they saw, but at least the crooks would get some more anxiety from the ear piercing sound and maybe leave a little sooner. I set one of these things off when I was doing field service for Dell and I came back to the depot late. I just about jumped through the window it was so loud.

if u remember to turn it on, they work great..

the sign out front is enough to deter most thieves
