View Full Version : Disturbing google feature

This has been mentioned before, but try punching your phone number, or your parents phone number, into a google search. It will show you a map to your house!

I know this feature has been around for some time, and there are other ways (www.anywho.com reverse lookup), and some people even think its convenient, but I find it invasive to have so much personal info shown on such a frequented website.

I got this forward today:

Google has implemented a new feature wherein you can type someone's
telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and then you will
be given a map to their house.

Before forwarding this, I tested it by typing my telephone number in
google.com. My phone number came up, and when I clicked on the
MapQuest link, it actually mapped out where I live. Quite scary.
Please look up your own number. Read below for details.

Think about it--if a child, single person, ANYONE gives out his/her
phone number, someone can actually now look it up to find out where
he/she lives.

It's just another privacy issue I have a problem with.

To test whether your phone number is mapped, go to: Google
[http://www.google.com ]www.google.com

Type your phone number in the search bar with or without dashes (i.e.
555-555-1212 or 5555551212) and hit enter.

If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information,
simply click on the telephone icon next to your phone number. It
takes 48-hours. If you are unlisted in the phone book, you might not
be in there, but it is a good idea just to check.

Please forward this information on to friends and family that would
like to remove this information from Google.

Anyone who knows my name can look me up in the phone book and get my address!

Also, if anyone knows my phone number, they can call me and I'll give them directions!

This doesn't concern me in the least.

Nothing shows up with home number, in-law's number, and cell number.

I tried a few numbers and nothing came up for me. Can it be because of the state we live in? I'm in California.

there's a form you can fill out if your # comes up and you can ask them to remove you.

if you're listed, the number often comes up with an address...doesn't it? that's just a step short of mapquesting if you ask me :hmm:

wow, mojo is back.

if someone knew your name it is just as easy for them to go to any public phone booth and look in the white pages. quite frankly I don't see how finding a map to your house on the internet is that surprising. unless you specify that the phone company conceals your phone number, your name, phone number and address will become public knowledge.
