Hello. My roommate bought an HP Pavilion Laptop off of Ebay sometime ago. The thing is running Windows Millenium and is crashing constantly. I was going to do a clean install for him, but when I tried to get into his Bios, it asked for a password. He didn't ever set one and has been on a mission to find it ever since. Unfortunately he came up dry and so I come to the braintrust here. Is there anyway to reset the bios password? The computer is his, he can prove that he is the rightful owner, but who does he call? The computer is not under warranty from HP, but is from Sam's club, no help there so far. Thanks.

there is usually a jumper to reste the bios
you can alos try taking out the bios battery for 5 - 10 min (without providing any other power...ie. battery or ac adapter)

Apparently there is a form you need to fill out & fax to HP, and they'll let you know how to reset the password (once they deceide you're the rightful owner).
Here's a long thread (http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/parseCurl.do?CURL=%2Fcm%2FQuestionAnswer%2F1%2C%2C0x8bc6e7726eccd5118ff10090279cd0f9%2C00.html&forumId=2&admit=716493758+1066823457190+28353475) about it from the HP support site.

Thanks for the link! I will have him give it a try this afternoon. It's funny in that when he called HP, they wanted to charge him $30 for tech support. According to the link, all it should have cost is a long distance call if they had given him the phone number...
