I am trying to get Outlook XP set up so that I can send mail, but for some reason I can't get the right outgoing server. Everywhere I've searched said it is "smtp.email.msn.com," but it won't work for me. I contacted my local company that bills me, but they were no help, and MSN's help site is of no help either. Am I missing something?

Give this a shot: secure.smtp.email.msn.com
I also thought that you had to setup outlook so that it uses your login and password when sending mail. I know you would think that it automatically does this, but sometimes it's not defaulted.

what's the company's name that bills you?
there are actually a lot of smtp servers out there that don't require to log you in... i'm sure you could just have it point to one of those if you need to send mail right now... then you can still send mail while MS gets back to you..... which ... could....take....

I tried secure.smtp.email.msn.com and it still doesn't work. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I contacted the local company who bills us, but they could find no record of an account, so I believe they are not the ones who can help me and it's got to be MSN. Guess I'll have to live without sending for now.
See if this works:
In Outlook, click Services on the Tools menu.
On the Services tab, click the affected account, and then click the Properties button.
Under Server Information, delete the entry in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) box, and then type secure.smtp.email.msn.com.
Under Outgoing Mail Server, click to select the My server requires authentication check box, and then click the Settings button.
Under Logon Information, click Log on using.
In the Account name box, type you MSN Member ID (everything before the at sign (@) of you MSN e-mail address).
In the Password box, type your MSN account password.
Click to select the Log on using Secure Password Authentication check box.
Click OK to close the Outgoing Mail Server dialog box.
Click OK to close the <Mail Account> Properties dialog box.
Click OK to close the Services dialog box.
