i wonder if anyone is going to pin any responsibility on the parents for raising these kids.
Parental responsibility is not PC.

Parents leave games, TV, and everything else raising their kids. That is just so sad.

Haven't these people watched "Bowling for Columbine?" Its not the games or else Japan would be one big murderous gang war. America has a really weird phenomenon where some of us just "snap" and start pulling the trigger. And its definitely not just us, Brazil has LOTS of murdering going on, but just as a lay observation I would have to say we got them beat in terms of "postal" situations where the gunnmen are doing the crime to get some sort of dysfunctional attention or respect...ie: colubine.

My Class has been talking about this. THe students are very against the idea. They feel that the lawyer and the families are just out for money. I agree. In the original press release the families lawyers said that the video game industry needed to cough up money to ease the pain of the people killed by video games. That this blood money should be given to victims of these deadly video games or something like that..... get real. Just lock up those boys with Mike Tyson.... that will fix them
Hey I know, we should have a Mike plan. If you are a dumbass and committe stupid crimes as a kid you can spend a day with Michael Jackson or Mike Tyson. Which is worse?

If Rockstar was my company I'd countersue the parents for negligence...slap a 200 million dollar countersuit right back on them. I have a kid, and I take responsibility for helping him make the right choices. If he gets in a scuffle at school, I don't go suing everybody and their mother - if he's at fault, we figure out what he (or I) could have done better, and we fix it. We talk about making the right choices all the time.
Sticking yer kid in front of a TV is not parenting. These parents are just looking to offload their guilt. Sorry for the rant.

Actually, you are quite wrong. There are situations where this happens in other countries, even ones with near draconian control over the media.
Take for example Germany, GTA, RTCW, quake, and many other games are banned there. However, a student goes on a murder rampage last year and kills several people.
Its not just america, but almost every other 1st and 2nd world country. Why? I believe that with a modernized society diffusion of responsibility happens. This means that parents believe that everybody else will take care of their kids, because its "their job". Teachers are supposed to make sure Johnny does his homework. Media is supposed to make sure the ratings are placed on TV so the kids will not watch them. Target is supposed to make sure that "violent" video games with M ratings are locked up, to make sure kids can't go in and buy them on their own.
However, where is the parents after the kid gets "home" to do is "homework". Its not "schoolwork" its "homework" that is done at "home" under the supervision of "parents".
Where is the parent when the kid watches TV and sees a rated R show? Its not up to TNT to ban rated R shows, its up the parent.
Where is the parent when the M rating appears on the video game, but the kids "parents" STILL buys it?
Go watch Orange County, the movie is decent, but I love the portrayal of the "stepmom" and the half-brother. Kid gets out of control, step mom bitches to nanny to give kid medicine. Again, diffusion in a rich modern day society.
What about Columbine? The parents "did not want to violate the privacy of my childs bedroom". Well, sorry bucko, that is complete horsecrap. Your kids HAVE no privacy if they live in your house and your their parents.
In my senior year at the UofMN (#1 psych school in the nation) I had to do a mock study using compiled data from other real studies. Using this data I was supposed to propose theory, make a hypothesis, present it to a board of professors to get funds, carry out the "study" and submit the results to said board.
My study was on violence and video games, all studies I found pointed to the fact that while there may be short-term increased aggression, due to higher heart rates and activity levels, there is NO evidence that it causes long-term aggression. The board's professors agreed with my paper and I got an A.
People disgust me by not taking responsibility. While I am a staunch supporter of civil liberties, every day I wonder more and more if there should be liscences for birth.

No, it's not. Perhaps you're looking for "rights"?

man will people ever own up to their own actions? Why are they always blaming someone else? Damn. Take responsibility for your poor parenting skills instead of suing sony. (if any sony reps are reading, can I get a free ps2?) hahaha

Once again as someone else has already stated, sony and rockstar = free money for the parents. wait wait wait, let me get this strait, The parents F*@# up and are not responsible so they should recieve a reward??? WTF is that. Is this what America is coming to??? I hope not.

i don't see how that mimicks the game ... that was chicago, not liberty city :)
not only is it bad that the families are suing GTA (rockstar or sony?), but the boys are giving them the reason why they did that.
so, i think the authorities should say "hey, you're dumb enough to follow the game into reality, let's keep playing. we'll drop you off with your rifle in a highly dangerous gang-populated area. have fun."

LK's post snipped
That's interesting LK. Do you think that you got that because your professors agreed with you? What would you have received if they disagreed? I hope still an A. If not, that's a pretty whack grading system.
