If I pay off some of the negative charges would they be deleted from my report or would they still be listed?

They would just be listed as PAID. Unless you were able to negotiate with the creditor IN WRITING that the derogatory marks will be removed once you paid them.

Do you get a FICA score??? Anything above 700 is good (A credit).

It's FICO. Not FICA.

Everything on your credit report stays at least 7 years from date of last activity. If you have unpaid debts, and pay them, they will show up as paid, yet still late.
For example, let's say you have a Citibank Visa you haven't paid for 6 months. When you pay it off, your report will show the account as "Current", yet it will show that at one time you were 180 days late.
So while paying it off will help your credit score, the bad info won't be totally deleted.
I have my most recent credit report in front of me, with a score of 778. I haven't had a single late payment or negative credit mark for more than 13 years.

I got a 753 on my FICO. The only thing holding me back from going higher is my age, "The length of time your accounts have been established is relatively short" :hmm:. Maybe next year it will go a little higher when I turn 25, of course it will also be nice to not have to pay extra charges when renting a car!

753 is gold. You don't need to get any higher than that.

850
Scores over 800 tend to be relatively rare.

From what i've heard, most people with scores over 800 are near retirement age. I wonder if anybody has ever conducted a study to see the age breakdown for FICO scores.

Thanks to Nickelback and her recent post on the Got|deals? section, I found I had several accounts which were closed but still showing up on my credit report as "current". That was skewing my score (690) because it said I had too many active accounts. I got screwed by Providian 5 years ago (and was part of a class action suit regarding their credit practices) and they're apparently still screwing me now.
It's a pain in the ass, but I'm cleaning it up one nasty letter at a time.
Edit: I confused Nickelback with Camarobabe - sorry ladies! /me runs & hides

ALright... this isn't cool... I went to check my score out.. and it asked me if I had a mortgage, and which bank it was from and for how much...WTF I don't have a damn mortgage, especially back then. Crap.. I need to call them now...

Make sure to call, but they do ask you questions to verify that you are you. Maybe this was just a test, so to speak.

Yeah, it said it was a test. I answered both of the questions None of the above. I hit submit, and it said it could not verify me :hmm:
I will be calling them tomorrow, bright and early, and hopefully get this figured out.

Hmmm.....I only have a score of 652...
But....I'm pretty sure most of that is because I've only had a credit card for 9 months. :)
Edit: Just kidding....it looks like it's just because I have a balance on my credit card even though I pay it full each month. The simulator says I would have a credit rating of 722 - 762 if I had a balance of zero.....cool. :)

Donnie and I both were involved in that suit also. We have had nothing but issues with them. Even now. I haven't used that card in 3 years, still paying on it (paying mine off with income tax return money!) and can't wait till I don't have to deal with them again!
I called, and they said that I don't have enough active account to create a score. yeah, I don't have a credit card (other than my debit card) any loans, or any mortagages. The guy said it was probably some medical bills that stalled me out (medical = mortgage?) oh well it worked out...
