so... i lost my job last week, and things are getting tight.
looking for work really sucks, given the time of year, and the fact that i have no equitable skills.
anybod have any idaeas as far as job searching, how to make things go more smoothly.

i suppose i could just ask for apex charitable donations.
save an apex family...
for just one dollar you can help this apex family have a home of thier own and have enough food until thier lazy @$$ daddy gets off his bum and secures a job

ahhh crap this sucks........

Heh, I can see it now, Apex employment and medical insurance. There's some info on what the unskilled labor should do in the Bristol Meyer thead. Best of luck. I think I hate looking for a job more than I hate working.

i'm on my 8th week with no job. fortunatly, my wife is still working and because I had several months warning I was able to save up a fair amount of cash.

I've recently become elgible for unemployment insurance benefits which is paying me 416 per week before taxes, so that is helping too. have you looked into that?

my advice for monster is to never use the "apply now" button. get the contact information for the job you want and send a email directly.

btw, what do you do?

totally agree...much more personal that way. one employer i talked to said they were getting so many generic *apply now* submissions like that, so they went with the ones that took the extra time to contact them personally, i.e. wanted it a bit more...

i do that, and i send a recommendation and a cover if appropriate

edit: also, you may want to try temping...it sucks, i know, but a lot of people are looking for temp to hire...there are some technical agencies as well as yer standard office help

Its your fault you lost your job because you don;t have skills the market needs. You should get more education or trainign and venture into a new more desirable market.

You assume that he lost his job because he was 1) not performing or 2) didn't have the skills. Isn't it possible that he lost his job because the company was in financial trouble, or perhaps he was in a position that could be replaced by lower paid workers.

Sure, it COULD be his fault, but i think that your post is rather rude.

In regards to the question regarding the job market, it really depends on where you are. Here in Los Angeles the job market is still very very difficult, and it's not looking too good for the holiday season.

he was making a sarcastic comment based on the bald guy at vonn's thread.

the job market in NC still sucks for IT related work.

See blueindian's comments above. He wasn't being serious. Well, he was being serious, but not in the way you were thinking.

The online job search firms are great tools to see who is hiring and what industries are in need of employees, but I found that going to local temp agencies and staffing firms led to a better ratio of applications to interviews. I got my last job through a staffing agency. I visited in the morning, had an interview set up for the following day and had an offer sheet on the table 3 days later.

with a baby, apply for WIC and public aid... public aid will, at the very least, give your kid medical coverage. it'll make things less tight. good luck, hope you find something soon!

Have you tried the government yet? I know the pay is suck and the work environment is worst compare to the private sector. But they do provide more stability. My 1.5 cents

I can't even get the government to call me back to set up a damn interview, let alone wow them with my personal skills. :|

Government takes a long time to process paperwork. My cousin works in DC as a consultant and it took her months to get security clearance, the proper paperwork signed and her start date was delayed.

My aunt works for the State of California, and needless to say, they are even slower.

I applied for some jobs at Cal State Northridge last summer and it took them 3 months to process my application. By the time they had a response, I had already been working for 2 months.

oh yeah, good luck with your interview!

Hey Squirrel, I am truly sorry that this happened to you. Thank God for that unemployment. I know it doesn't pay the bills...at the start...but this might be a great time to look into another career or even into starting your own business. I started to really hate working in the high tech industry and found a way to make a living as a filmmaker, of course I have no little rodents and live in a sketchy neighborhood with cheap rent. The thing is I am so much happier than I was rebuilding servers and replacing LCDs for Unisys. I don't really miss the money. So if you had a dream that got sidetracked along the way, at least take a look at it.
