riddle for you all, if you have heard it before just say so and give the answer :)

You are walking on the street, you get the the crossroads of life, one road leads to heaven, one road leads to hell. There is a house at the crossroads where there lives two brothers. One lies and one tells the truth. There is one brother outside and you can only ask him one question to find out which road is which. What do you ask him.

Heard similar questions, there's a bunch of them. After thinking it through, I figure the question is, "Would your brother tell me this road (pick either road) leads to heaven?"

If it is, both brothers will answer no. If it isn't, both will say yes.

arent you supposed to ask, if you were your brother, which way would you say to go? cuz if you ask the one that lies, then he would tell you the wrong way to go. and if you ask teh one that tells the truth, he would say the wrong way too. and they you just go the opposite way that they say. that wouldve been the right way to go

zen and glagic both have good answers. Actually the same answer worded differently. I don't remember the riddle but their answers make sense so that must be it.

You ask the first person you meet where he'd go if he died. The road to heaven will be revealed. Unless the truthful guy had some other sort of sin on his head.

Yeah but if you asked the guy who lies that, you don't know if he is lying or not. Maybe he wants to go to heaven, so he'd say hell, and maybe the opposite. I think Zen has the right answer. Plus, there was that similar dilemma on the movie "Labrynth" where there were two doors and there were brothers and the girl was trying to figure out which guy lies and which tells the truth and which door to choose. I think she came up with a similar conclusion and confused the two of them in the process. lol.

Who said anything about where you want to go? I'm asking where he is going. And if we don't know if he's lying or not then we can't tell with any of the other methods either. Maybe the lier is lying to himself about his brother's truth telling skills? and accidentally tells you the truth. It's much more likely that they wouldn't know eachother or they wouldn't know which brother you are talking about or maybe the truth brother doesn't know his brother is a lier or vise versa.

This is going to be another one of those .999~=1? questions huh?

Dammit I'm right. You pick a road and ask the guy, "Would your brother tell me this is the road to heaven?"

If the road is indeed the road to heaven, the truthful brother would say "no," because he knows his brother would lie. The lying brother would say no, because his truthful brother would actually say "yes." So either way a no answer tells you that is the correct road. Vice versa if either answers "yes."

explanation:
if it was the brother that lies he always lies so you would go the opposite way as what he says
if it was the brother that always tells the truth he would tell the truth and u would go the opposite way of what he said :)

I like Zen's answer better. What if the lying one wanted to go to hell? And that doesn't resolve the issure of which brother we are talknig about. Maybe there's a third brother that he thinks you are talking about.
