Boy's Costume Catches Fire at School
Thu Oct 30, 6:32 PM ET

ELLSWORTH, Maine - A high school student suffered severe burns after his Army sniper costume of leaves and a grass-like material was set on fire by a classmate during a Halloween assembly Thursday, police said.

A 15-year-old at Ellsworth High School was charged with starting the fire with a lighter after allegedly saying, "I wonder if this will burn," police Lt. Harold Page said.

Donald Awalt, 14, of Ellsworth, was airlifted to a Boston hospital with third-degree burns. He suffered burns to his back, legs and head, Page said. His condition was not immediately released.

"This is just a prank gone horrifically wrong," Page said.

The entire school — about 500 students, many in costume — was at the "Spook Day" assembly in the school gymnasium when the flames broke out at the top of the bleachers.

Some people initially thought it was a joke when they saw the flames. Then students bolted for the exits in a panic.

The victim ran down to the floor, where students and a school worker used a fire extinguisher and a coat to smother the flames.

The 15-year-old was charged with reckless conduct, aggravated assault and arson and taken to a youth detention center in Charleston, Page said. The boy was remorseful and said he never intended for anyone to be hurt, Page said.

... what bullsh*t... he lit a guy's costume on fire! unless the kid inside that costume is invincible, someone's gonna get hurt! this just ruins the fun of halloween...:(

No, we need to sue the makers of Grand Theft Auto. I know that somewhere in that game people burn. Also Tomb Raider I think, and probably several other games...

seriously, tho, people did stuff like this 10, 20, 50, 100 years ago, it just didn't make national headlines. people were more private, now we're all voyeurs... that's the only difference.

not completely true either.

before when people were lit on fire, it was cause they were "a WITCH! a WITCH! BUUUUURRRRRNN THE WITCH!"

and people came out to watch.

I refer back to a previous post about some stupid kid riding his bike who hit a car.

NEGLIGENCE on the parents part.

Well I question the sniper costume as in did it come with a real looking gun. Not important. Second is what is the kid doing with a lighter. Oh wait...went back and read. High school. Errr...the guy is an idiot to be in high school with a lighter and wondering if someones custime will burn.

Terrible tragedy.

He probably thought it would only burn a little. He probably didn't expect the whole thing to go up. I don't think anyone wants to set someone else on fire. Also I'm not to sure the whole grass costume idea is the best idea (survival of the fittest). Not to say that pyro boy is completly blameless though.

I've done stupid things before that could have been worse. Right AC?
