OfficeMax has the HP DVD210i on sale right now (while supplies last) for only $99.99 plus tax with an additional $50 dollars mail in rebate (rebate is vaild only from 11/09/2003-04/31/2004.)

from now thru November 8th, buy the dvd at $99.99 then wait until Nov 9th and bring the original receipt back in and they'll do a buy/sell back thing and you'll get a new receipt with the new date on it for the rebate.

print out this online ad and bring it to your local OfficeMax:

yeah i know it's slow, but hey, isnt 4x2.4x8x the fastest one or something right now?

i went to my local officemax earlier today and i didnt see the HP DVD210i so i grabbed the HP DVD300i which is a 4x2.4x8 r/rw. i'm not sure if they realized it or not, but they charged me the same price as they charged for the HP DVD210i.

How long do 2x and 4x take in terms of minutes to burn a full 4.7gb dvd?

And is there a linky to the rebate?

8x is pretty much here, but it is expensive and media will be expensive/hard to come by for a while.

no its not, because the speed that dvds write at is at a different rate than what a normal cd burner is. pedity is right.

I don't have money for the 8X yet but I'm pretty happy with my Pioneer (DVR-A05) 4X DVD-RW drive. I'm waiting for drives that could do dual layers.

CD speeds are measured from a base of a single speed CDROM of 150Kb/s (So 16x CDR will read 2400Kb/s)

a 4x DVD burner will burn at 5540 Kb/s which is equivalent to a 36 x CDRW

Actually, it depends on the bitrate of your video too...you can't gauge by "hours" of video.

1] 1x DVD burning is not 150K/s like a CDR. 1x DVD = 1350K/s, 2x = 2700K/s, 4x = 5400K/s. Comparing CDR burning speeds is like comparing apples to oranges. But to put it in perspective, burning a DVD at 4x is like burning a CD at 36x.

2] It takes around 15 minutes to burn a full 4.7GB DVD at 4x. So in Studio 8 for instance, you can set the bitrate you want your video to render at, which changes the quality of the video. The lower the bitrate, the lower the quality, the less data, the more video you can put in the same amount of space. So yes, you CAN burn 2 hours of video in the same 15 minutes to the same 4.7GB DVD. Or, you can set the bitrate to be higher and get more quality with less quantity. I had to do this on a recent project. I was about a minute and 15 seconds over time. Rather than trim footage, I lowered the quality to 99% and that put me a minute UNDER with no noticeable degradation in video quality.

dont you think the price will go up on the 9th? i hardly think the price will stay at $99 when there is a $50 rebate. so when you try to do a price match wont they try to charge you more money, or are you going to say there is something worng with the drive

whoa i see triggered a lot of confusion...4x ~ 15mins thats cool for me...dont need a 8x, but a dual layer is a must for me.

you buy the dvd burner on or before the 8th... then on the 9th go back in with your dvd burner and they'll do an adjustment thing to your receipt and you use the new receipt to do the rebate.

don't mean to burst anyone's bubble, but i could only find a $50 rebate on the dvd300i/e, NOT the 210 or whatever was originally posted. so .... i could be wrong, but all i saw was the 300i/e

oh, and THAT rebate is from nov 9 - march 31, so you got a few months!

Well, you're going to be waiting a while until consumer dual layer DVD burners are out. The technology has just now been announced within the last week. Probably going to be 6 months to a year before they have anything ready for retail.

you're right that rebate is for the dvd300i... but then again if you search their store/website for the HP DVD210i you wont find that there either (atleast i couldnt find it).
